Not sure if I’m doing this the right way, hope I don’t make the gods mad. Just finished a 5’ 5" Fish, and I’d like to get some feedback. I got all the measurements from Swaylock by doing an achieve search and answered most of my questions the same way (great stuff). Going try a 5’ 11" next.
The glass is a double 6 on the deck and single on the bottom, Lok-box fins (double foil hull), Sprayed color on the form and the pin line is on the first sanding coat. Not too symmetrical on the pin line layout so the deck may look a little off.
Got them from Rainbow, you should know them. The pics do not do them justice, they really look good up close. Only thing I wish I had known was the cant that was biult in to the fin. It doubles the cant with the little V I put in the tail. (see Pic) but the fins look great, and should work well.
Got them from Rainbow Fin, part of the Lockbox system. Had to make my own jig to cheap to spend what I recall to be about $250 for a jig from Rainbow. Aslo was kinda on my own when it came to find info on how to set them. Mine are about 1/2" up from the butt crack, putting them no more then 15" up from the ends of the twin pin tails.
Very cool nebulous! Shoulda had rainbow put you in touch with me for install tips! Sorry about that. Looks like you pulled it off OK though! Boxes are adjustable cant wise on install. Easily 3 degrees from side to side, more if you increase rout depth. Kind of difficult to do accurately with out the Jig and router set-up we use. Any questions send me a message at lokbox@sbcglobal.net Hope you like her!
Thanks for the kind words, I’m assuming that pinlines and color layouts get easier with practice. I’ve seen a number of postings and pics you’ve put out there for us newbies to see and admire. As I posted earlier that was the hardest thing for me. The rails and the amount of rocker was like second nature to me I just kinda saw what I was going for as I worked the foam. I’ve been surfing along time and now pretty mad at myself for NOT trying this years ago.
Thanks for your feedback, I try to send you a private message just after I got my fins, saw you in the archives. But no worries the lokbox system was easy to install. And the fins well they should perform great, just what the design (shape) calls for.
PS. I would like to say thanks to everyone else for the compliments.
looks alot like my first fish i shaped. just finishing up fish #3 and i gotta say it gets easier with practice. this one is my best pavel impression possible haha.
a few things to look at next time…
tune down the rails more maybe. they are very boxy in the tail. just like my 1st fish i made. same goes for the butcrack…try and make it more rounded and flowing off of the pins to the deck.
does look good though man!
the taping off/ painting comes eaiser with time. you will train your eye. i can finaly run a piece of 1/4" tape down a lapline in 1 fluid motion and get it as perfect as i can see.
