001 Trials and Tribulations ( with pics)

As a general thankyou to all who have posted on the forum, here are the reaults of the 001 project…

In the spirit of my first build i hope you enjoy this light hearted post ,

So this is what i thought i would like to ride , a litre or litre half more than what i normally ride in volume, compressing  an old fav 6’3 outline into a fishy( oops i should not use that here ) shorter semi performance board that will fit nicely in pocket and still be able to hold a decent turn up the face

heres the outline- whilst im using AKU im thinking " how hard is this going to be …" picturing old school blank in my mind

I politely inquire about ’ having a dig at my first board and need some supplies’ at a local shapers factory , i was politely pointed in the right direction - away from his factory

note- if i continue the post like this it will turn into a novel so bypass a few days,

research ,swaylocks, talk to people who have done it, reesearch swaylocks etc

Finally i jump in the ’ deep end ’

build a temp shaping /glassing area grap the gear i think i need and an overpriced blank ( by this stage im busting to mow some foam and smell some resin)

Heres the blank after being whittled , scraped , gouged , planed bits of stringer jammed in by sanding , unevenly planed ( cause i gotta use a precise tool )

But i have to say ,  i was focused in that semi blue room !

Note ,  notice i have not include pic under shaping lights, nor under any lights giving an indication of the surface ‘blemishes’ and curve shadows - must of forgot those pics

i think theres a foil pics somewhere

By this stage ( two afternoons ) im getting itchthy to see how this thing will go , yer its a little thick im thinking, yer its a little wide im thinking now how bout some glass

research, read, read, swaylocks, youtube, read, -  take shape to Yorky who ive never met ( he welcomes me like an old friend )to ask about a few things he points out some issues and i did not correct them as i wanted to ‘feel’ the errors of my ways in the water, hey theres always 002 right?

jump right in and buy the whole polyester mekp kit ( see how much ive learned already ha )

Any 1st time builders reading , you have not appreciated the amount of work / skill in a board until you have shaped + glassed one , get in and have a go its bloody fun , stinky and adventurous

heres another pic before the hotcoat kicked ( it looks better that way

.

so i see a very small window for a swell , 1 and 1/2 days of on-cross shore shoulder high stuff , due to fade in around 48hrs after final hotcoat( approx 10 hrs from now ) . damn, no wait i can make it !!!, get those fins in!

In the spirit of the first build ( or was it the buzz from the resin ) im up at dawn to hand block the hotcoat on deck and setout my fins

read , swaylocks , call to Yorky ( about fin layout) as mentioned - top bloke ( And has the most eye catching performance boards in the region i surf at the very least - onya Yorky)

so here is where im at

i reckon the swell has hit its peak ( max 12 hrs till she fades says magicseaweed data ) so i will be up at sparrows fart ( thats dawn for you US of A fellas ) and hand sanding to 400 or so…

It’s like the Seinfeld episode , uno with the ugly baby - Ya gotta see THE BABY !!!

Hope you had a chuckle…but mainly a thankyou to those who know contributing to those that don’t, and thanks to Yorky for giving me the time of day while he’s setting up the factory

oh the shame … i swear they were pics in the preview post . apologies . newbs huh?

great to see you finally did it mate, Im getting fong to glass my first boards as all I want to do is concentrate on shaping at the moment.  Im gonna give a crack at glassing real soon, its something I gotta learn.

Tell me, Im interested, what tools did you end up using to shape your board, I only got very basic, what did you use.

Wrapped to see another sunshine coast lad have a crack at it, you will have to bring it to marks board day so I can have a look.

I havent had time to pop into yorkys shaping place but I really want to meet the lad, what a awesome job he has done.

Cheers Digger ,

honestly never thought i would give it a go, but just wanna be a board ?-lut and ride em all ha.

the whole time i was just appreciating the process, no high expectations …

I seen your setup and was stoked to see your shape, just jump in and glass if u wanna ride, a fan and some ground sheet + proper organic mask ( i use sundstrom ) maybe a pe catalyst + uv might be an option if you can block out light?

Please take what i have to say with a grain of salt ( its like the blind leading the blind? a little ) but i used a $98 power plane (makita copy - grinded smooth front plate ) on a low tolerance 6’3 blank

I stumbled across it and it had very near the correct nose/ tail rocker for what i wanted to try , also dragon skin was helpful to me ( again grain of salt ) hence i had some tears that tagged the blank , the sureform i got in my purchase was far too fine for  my rough work and i used my cheese grater type sureform i use for car body filler here and there , besides their are much more skilled people to ask about tools than me

Yes , we are lucky that some board makers on the sunny coast (and yamba ) can see we just wanna dig at it ( pardon the pun ) .

ahh, mate, my sander cost me 50 bucks and I still aint paid ledge for it, oops.  I wanna modify it in the new year, get rid of the black thing on the back of the plate and a few other things.  Ive got some sanding blocks, I bought some egg shaped foam, cut it in a circle and stuck some sandpaper on it,  bought some paper for doing the rails, forget what you call the stuff.  Bought a level,  use packing sheets for my templates, 5 bucks from the local hardware, its a bargain. I used cheap 35 buck second blanks to learn on, got 4 shapes out of them.  The next blank will be a yellow from midget, no mucking about with the next one mate, gonna try real hard to get it right without dinging the bloody thing during shaping.

What tool did you use to cut in the fcs plugs out of interest, did you get that second hand, Im a bloody cheapscate and if I can get something second hand I will think about it with my experience.

Really hope you bring your board to marks day and we can swap some stories.  I hope to bring my 2 boards down.

You put a lot of thought into it.  You had a plan.  You worked your plan, and it looks like your board came out just the way you planned it.  The resulting board is an unqualified success no matter how you look at it.  Good job.  It looks great and I’m sure you’ll have a lot of fun surfing it.

good stuff mate, be stoked to check it out and have a go maybe ??? at my 'board testing day' , its on at same spot on Aussie Day early next year....hoping to have quite a few diff boards there if I dont sell them all, have been getting rid of alot of my personal quiver of late but no chance to replace them as yet, but better do it soon coz Jan 26 not that far away...good to see you had a go at shaping, any questions, you can always ask me.....

moving back to Sunny Coast in new year too....
