1 lb EPS Ugly Stick... (I found my niche!)

OK, Here’s another one of my experimental designs that I’ve been itching to try… Unfortunately its in the running for the freaking hideous looking award of 2006! Haha! I have found what I’m good at as far as glassing boards… Making them ugly!! Oh well, as long as I get the feel of what this thing can do in the surf it will have served its purpose… Plus, I really wanted to try Epoxy glassing

1 lb EPS with a 1/4" wood stringer. The blank started off as a really rough wavy block so I had to work pretty hard at getting it even and clean while shaping it… Once I decided to glass it, making it even and clean no longer mattered! Hahaha!! Lucky for me JTroy came over and helped me get started and I used the Resin Research epoxy resin… I liked it a lot! THANKS JTroy!!!

Slightly crooked laminate with dimensions of my 3rd experiment Canoe Paddle board. This one is for knee paddling or glassy day SUP. Concave nose, Very flat mid- bottom, slight V in tail, eyeball rocker. Should be a very stable knee paddler…

Those stripes are the Kevlar tape strips I picked up from JTroy. The 1lb EPS needs some strength so these seem to fit the bill and after laminating the board it is still VERY light… I really goofed up laying them out straight but no biggie as the board is for me.

6oz-4oz bottom glass…

On top I tried the yellow Kevlar tape to see how it would come out. For some reason the yellow was harder to lay down flat which added to the sheer beauty of the board… Not to mention ending the middle strip short! Hehe!

Top is 6oz-4oz-4oz Very solid!

Paying homage to my before and after surf hangout…

So now its on to some lap grinding, hot coating, side Pro Boxes, leash plug, vent plug, sanding, then gloss coat… Its sure to be an ugly gem of a board! HAHA!!! Oh yeah, JTroy, the board is SOLID! Maybe one day I’ll care how it ends up looking and take my time!

totally love it!!!

Hey don’t knock yourself.

Charlie said you’re a damn good shaper and board maker just like JTroy

Maybe you two should start your own label

UncleD’s a heck of a glasser you give him a ring…

How many boards you need anyway??

hahaha…

I should be asking myself the same question…

9’ x 25.5" x 3.5" sounds like a hotdog SUP

Is that CMP’s foam?

Wow nice job… you have done stuff I didn’t even try yet. I never did the kevlar thang. I think that would be a great hotdog longboard for me. I love those laminates. What was the glassing schedule?

You can shape and glass well. If you want, you can shape me a SUP. I like your ideas and design.

I am excited for you… Mahalo for the inspiration!

D

cn: i reckon you’ve done a great job mate. i look forward to seeing photos of you riding it. happy surfing.

Thanks for the good words! Really, I’m a pretty bad glasser… I figured if I keep at it I may become marginal… Haha! I feel shaping is the easy part in comparison… Glassing and sanding take a certain patience that my parents always said I lacked! Hehe! I think I’m too impatient which is why I took up glassing to begin with! You know how the glassers here in Hawaii are slammed with so much work… Boards can take awhile…

I got the last 2 blanks from CMP and I have 6 more on order… He is one really cool guy. Man, the wood veneer he put on Parmenter’s shape for Buffalo was just awesome! Unreal quality… Right now I’m trying to make my dream quiver and have it ready for the upcoming winter season so all the experimenting needs to happen now… Its the impatient thing again! I feel the Munoz boards were a great starting point but now its all about making the right board for each type of wave… My boards for over 8’ North Shore surf will be very different from my South Shore boards…Maybe even some for certain spots… Just really fine tune the quiver to maximize day to day surf stoke… Majority will be for Canoe paddle in from my knees and a couple SUP’s

The EPS foam and Epoxy resin opened the doors to go all out with bigger boards while keeping the weight down so we can actually turn hard… I really like the Resin Research stuff… Shoot, I need to get rid of some of my old boards!!! I need more room!

Uncle D, the rice paper works way better than the one I got from Hakubondo! It doesn’t jam up my printer when I used the photo paper like you said and its a little thicker which helps… Thanks!

I glassed the top 6-4-4 and the bottom 6-4… If you want the kevlar to come out really flat and clean you have to spend time peeling off the edges where some plastic like stuff is flaring out here and there… I left it all and it bumps up… The yellow was harder to keep flat than the red for some reason… Blue would look nice… JTroy, you got blue?? I really think this board will not snap because it seems to be very solid. We’ll see how it goes…

Gosh, when you see this board in person you will withdraw the glassing compliment! I just took a look at the boards I got coming from Parmenter and all I can say is I am a very AMATEUR shaper!! The two 10’-6"s he made for me are soooo clean and beautiful. I mean, wow. I’m just drooling at the knee paddle gun he shaped… Awesome… I’ll post pics when I get them… Thanks again for the kind words guys!

Awesome shape! great job!

Hey carve? what was the purpose for the kevlar tape and direction of the weave? If the price if good, I’ll try it on my next 12 footer.

I just visited Surfgarage shop…they have a standup from Tropical Island. 11’ x 30" x 4.6" (19" wide nose, 23" tail) slight v in the tail, soft rail nose to hard tail, single box fin, 5" plus at nose and 3 and 1/2" tail rocker. Whats your take on this board for me?..the price they wanted was way toooooooo much! they wanted $2000 without paddle. oh by the way…the 30 inch width was at dead center.

Also, it was made from eps from pacific allied. glass job was ok…lots of dimples on bottom, color resin work ok, some areas color was darker and some lighter. Does 2000 grand sound right? I think it was used…but, they claims its brand new.

aloha

I am glad the rice paper and my hint worked out for you. Later when I come back from Vegas, I’ll start a thread on simplified rice paper laminates using an ink jet for the beginners glassers. I think you did find great a niche and I am serious about you shaping me 12’ SUP. I think you have the advantage over most shapers because you know what works on an SUP. It hard to explain to a shaper to make the whole board thick, rails boxy, the deck flat and very little vee in the bottom. I am not picky, I just want it to float and you to have some fun shaping it. (We can call it the CarveNalu model and make under the Kanaloa SUP Surfboard label… mass produce it in China and beat Surftech to the draw…a fantasy of mine.)

The bottom line is that you had fun building it and I am sure it will work just super.

I got the Kevlar tape from JTroy. I haven’t broken it down to how much per foot yet but you can PM him for a price. As an experiment I ran the tape to minimize another layer of glass to keep the board light as possible using the 1 lb foam. The rest of the glass I just pulled over like I normally would. Seems to be very strong. Maybe even overkill on the bottom but that 1 lb EPS sure is flimsy and soft for a large board…

2 grand is high but try telling that to the guy that made it! Its a major pain if you are used to making regular 10’ and under boards… Still, with your skills you could mow one out and glass it for less than 700 bucks… Plus, those dimensions seem like the board will be super stable but not ride waves to good… Unless that nose and tail dimensions are flip flop then it would be good… I’m thinking the nose is 23 yeah? If that’s the case, the board sounds like it would fit the bill but 2 grand could be 3 large boards or 4 regular long boards or 6 short bords… Haha!!!

Most of the information I have on these boards are from the ones that I’ve tried that work well… I was also lucky enough to spend time with Dave Parmenter discussing the details of what makes a good SUP… He showed me a lot of things… Heck, I just ordered another knee paddle another gun from him! Before that I was thinking a lot of different things but after using some of his theorys and trying boards my light bulb popped and was replaced by the sun! Haha! Honestly Uncle D, I’ve never made a board for someone before. All my friends that want a board from me get the same thing… They come over and without any idea whatsoever on how, I hand them the planer and they made some pretty cool boards! I really would rather you come over and shape it yourself. You’re welcome to use my room and tools and I can show you the basic steps that will help you along… If you get screwed up, I’ll just help you get back on track… I’m 100% sure you can make a cool SUP… The thing with the board you want, a 12 foot SUP, the margin for error is a lot bigger than say a performance 9 footer…

Haha! Funny! Surftech is already coming out with the Laird Hamilton SUP model soon… Its very important we all make sure everyone you know who gets into this understands the impact they can make around others and the impact the board can make TO others!!! I’m actually very glad I have nothing to do with something like that!!!

Aloha Carve:

I just might take you up on the shaping and have you look over my shoulders. It’s about time I start shaping too. That stuff about mass production and Surftech is my way of being cynical. I prefer boards built with aloha with the board builders’ mana passed through their hands, thoughts and skills into each board they build.

However, I do like the concept of Kanaloa SUP Surfboards because I want something to represent the complete waterman and not just surfing. Perhaps we can have Brian Keaulana and yourself be our poster boys. I think the young Hawaiians need good role models to look up to and to learn how to surf with Aloha… And, to learn every aspect of ocean activities including non-surfing stuff like fishing, canoe paddling, water safety (lifesaving), conservation, protecting the environment, etc. Don’t mind me, you inspired me and got me thinking about this stuff.

Mahalo,

D

Mahalo Carve,

oops…yes the board was 23" at nose and 19" tail. I guess price is all relevant over at surfgarage…9’5" goes for $1400.

I don’t mind paying the price? but you gotta see that board, color variances, pressure dings on bottom, and parts of the stringer is covered with something? (probably spackle). I know the shaper/glasser put in lots of time, its a huge board.

I have a 12 footer that still needs shaping. Kevlar strips sounds great and gives the board a nice touch.

Mahalo for the info!

A hui hou

I saw the board you shaped in a day over at Charlie’s awhile back jus like DP.

But you know DP amd Brian’s take on SUP poliferation.

I think you have the same philosophy.

It’s gonna be the current incarnation of Tow-Ats just won’t need a ski to plow though the LDPC (lay down paddle crew) in the line up.

I think they need to be promoted more as a training device as that’s what original crew has been using them for. Every SUP rider I talk to says there’s no better full body exercise you can get to get ready to ride the big ones on a conventional board.

If you can pump these out in a day… make a bunch of rentals…

Maybe DP, Brian and you folks should put out the first SUP exercise DVD and start arranging Gilad-like SUP training sessions at Waimea during the summer and at Haleiwa Park, Ala Moana, Keehi Lagoon, or Kaneohe Bay… Better than OC1 paddling and cheaper too.

Yeah instead of Hawaiian Fire Surf Lessons taking over White Plains,we can have Hawaii SUP Full Body Workout taking over all the flat water areas. Way better for the environment than those Rent a Jet Ski Operations.

Here’s your tag line…

“Every surfer deserves a six pack”

You got me inspired… Gonna tape up the knee and try and get some water time tomorrow…

Haha! If you do this everyday for extended amounts of time I can assure you will get into tip top shape! Good to hear you will get back into the water!

You guys wanna hear something funny? Regarding my impatient thing… There’s a little swell in town right now so I wanna get this new board into the water at the crack of dawn… I’m rushing all day to finish this thing but… This Epoxy takes awhile to go off to where I can sand it. I read somewhere here that a little heat makes it harden quicker… I just installed my Pro Boxes and its already 7:15pm and I still need to grind the boxes before the neighbors go to sleep and I’m going to be in the water by 5:30am tomorrow… Sooooooo I put my lights that generate some heat a foot above the boxes for around 45 minutes…

I go get my sh*t together for the dawn patrol and come back and feel the resin and its nice and stiff! Alright!!! Then I notice the bottom of my board looking like its getting pregnant! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! AAAAAAAAAAGGGHHHHHH!!! 2 -6 inch round delam bubbles!!! Oh well, the hell if I’m gonna let that stop me from seeing how the Prototype #3 works!!! Buwahahahahahahahaha!!! I put a gallon jug on each bubble to smash it down then proceed to grind the boxes… Now it looks like I got a funky double concave going on! Hahahaha!!! Fresh lumpy hot coat, delam concaves, and I’ll be surfing my brains out before that sun peaks over the horizon baby!!! Ahwoooooooooooooooooo!!! Hahahahahaha!!!

No worries!

with your surfing abilities…no board will hold you back. Maybe you stumbled across something new? good thing epoxy is not water soluble LOL!

enjoy and catch one wave for the bro who’s land-lock!

A hui hou!

I had sort of given up on the SUP idea but you’ve got me hyped again.

How much does it weigh do you think?

DOH!!

Gotta watch how much heat you put on…

When I was there those heat lamps were making me sweat and it was pretty warm right under those lights.

Hey Carve, got a profile shot of that board?
