Here’s my 10’ Knee Paddle Gun that came out really cool… Its 3# EPS but I still had it glassed heavy. Perfect for gnarly surf with bumps or wind… The APS3000 had a little bit of a tough time cutting the 3# stuff and the blank had quite a bit of melted foam that made it very rough to finish. As I sanded it it just kept on getting these hard rough bb’s. Had some big chunks missing too! Haha!
I brought it to a glasser who I heard was good. He looked at it and said he likes them rough and after he spackles it the bond will be very strong… He laughed when I told him how hard I was trying to make the board perfect and smooth. He told me DON’T MAKE THEM SMOOTH! Gave it to him Wed at lunch at got a call on Friday around the same time and it was done! All the other boards in there were done too with a whole stack of new orders ready to go… He must have a bunch of Menehunes working aroung the clock with him… Haha! Picked it up yesterday and it looks soooo awesome! The guy does unreal work! Insanely solid. Even his vent plug came out killer. Unreal quality… This board sets the standard for our new company. His company is called Island Glass and his name is Brian. His wife does very nice color work too… Can’t wait to try it on the North Shore in some hollow waves…
10’ x 25-3/4 x3-13/16"thick x 14-1/2tail x 14-3/4" nose with 2+1 fin set up
Thanks! What makes this board unreal is the great glass job on it. Especially knowing how it looked when I brought it to them.

Marvelous work! Just out of curiosity - does the name indicate that it is not suitable for SUP for some reason? It appears to have plenty of volume…

Thanks! I can only take credit for laying it out and scrubbing it out because the machine does all the work! Its to narrow to SUP. I stood on it in my little pool but in the ocean with all the current, wind, chop etc, it is very hard to stay standing. I made a SUP Gun for that.

But…
…a Stomp Pad…???..
I know, I never put one on my regular boards that I arm paddle. I hated them on top of them being ugly. Last winter I found my back foot slipping off because I push turns at different angles and a lot harder off the tail because I can lean on the short paddle and get all this torque. I put a pad on and problem solved. With the longer SUP paddle, for some reason my feet push at different angles again and I don’t need one… Just a personal preference thing…
Excellent! If you don’t mind, PM and let me know how to get in touch with Island Glass. I think Mike Casey is looking for someone to glass his EPS boards.
I got the shaped 12’3" SUP back from Charlie Wong. I am puting on the tail block now and will glass soon. It really looks home made next to your latest creation. I’ll post pictures soon.
Thanks for setting the bar higher and doing excellent work.
Nice Board! I curious about a vent plug on 3 lb eps - any reason or are you just being super careful?
You mean, no need?? Haha! I thought all Epoxy resin on EPS foam made gases… I told my glasser to put it in and he never questioned me and did it… Oh well, can’t hurt…

This reminds me of the boards Rabbit Bartholomew rode at the pipeline back in the day. It was in one of the movies by the late Hal Jepsen.
Thanks guys! Funny you mentioned this… The other day I picked up a DVD and it had some footage from Free Ride and there was Rabbit at Pipe on the board you’re talking about. I thought the exact same thing… My board looks just like that! Haha!
Is akubird/progressive shapes cutting those for you?
and is that Charlie’s blank?
I picked up a stock APS3000 6’8" shape from chris on saturday that I going to play with.
It was a surfblanks australia red which means it was heavy but I’m only PU gluing on some 1/42" sycamore veneer on it with some 3/8" balsa rail bands before I lightly glass it to compare it to the EPS stuff we’re making. Trying to keep it as light as I can with wood skins. I know the rails are over kill but its the best way to deal with not having to wrap skins.
Chris said he can shape EPS and showed me some of Jim Richardson’s Marko blanks he was carrying which might be another option. I know Jeff’s shaping the Marko on EA’s DSD machine but that after he puts a stringer in it.
The squared rails off the APS3000 are perfect for attaching solid balsa rail bands. But I don’t know if the APS3000 can handle shaping stringerless APS. All the blanks I saw at akubird had center stringers like yours I suppose.
Sure would be nice to design on the APS3000 to cut some stringerless EPS then slap on some balsa perimeters and your own home made premade wood skins. If this works the APS3000 will finally be my “no shaping room at home” solution. Perfect for those infrequent “fundraiser auction boards” I’m still interested in doing as community projects.
Are you gonna eventually advertise or stay underground?
Oh yea that couple out west do one heck of a job with EPS.
I’m surprised DP’s not using them for his EPS SUPs and letting Kimo just stick with his PU stuff.
There’s alot of good stuff coming out from the boondocks out there…

Howzit oneula, Hows these winds??? NO CAN!!! I surfed super nice small Laniakea this morning for 3 hours. 4:30am I drove all the way to town, felt the wind and hauled azz back to North Shore! Anyway, Chris at Proshapes and his APS3000 is what I use. Yes again to Charlies blanks. He just dropped off another load to me a couple hours ago. I get choke blanks at the machine and this is in my shed right now…
We’re going to advertise thru our website and some cheap other ways. I’m not going to go all out and spend a ton of money trying to go big… I’m a small time guy who just likes to surf and make some extra money doing something fun. this is not my primary source of income… As far as DP using Island Glass, my thoughts exactly. Kimo has choke work as it is and Brian them do unreal work and are FAST! Yup, West Side get good guys out there!
we cut stringerless boards all the time. No worries. Just scratch a VS virtual stringer to line up the laser. You may want to slow the machine down and pay for more passes (if using a block blank). We have cut EPS, XPS, PU and a few experimental foams. A few months back we jammed a run of stringerless fish and shortboards using the Marko/Surflight foam. The Marko stringerless boards come off absolutely perfect as we all know the issues with stringers… The marko stingerless blanks come with a center refference line down the blank.
