10'4" Epoxy Board for 220lbs?

Looking at the Clark 10’5" S.

Easy paddle, catch, turn, noseride, etc. Most importantly Hawaiian Air now ships up to 10’4" now!

Maybe 23 wide. You think 3.25" thick will be fine? Using epoxy…or maybe go a little thicker? I’ll thin out the nose and tail and tail rocker will start last 4 ft or so. I want a wide nose maybe 20" though I don’t want a heavy noserider, hence the epoxy. Maybe around 14lbs or so?

Are epoxy longboards prone to delams? I’ll only be using this board in 3-6 ft waves. Nothing radical.

At 220 you might want to go a little thicker. I would also take a close look at the 10’7" H, blank. If you need to stay under 10’4" take a look at the 10’4" Phil Edwards blank, it also has some thickness. I think a little more thickness is better for the big guys. Also from what I under stand epoxy does delam on standard blanks.

epoxy delam ??

you have got to be joking , epoxy sticks better than anything , if it delams its because the foam has pulled away from itself (thats a foam problem )…

also im 220 and and my long board is 2 3/8 , length and width give good paddle and early planeing , volume adds float =boat = un responsive…

regards

BERT

At 10’4", 3.25 is plenty. I’m 215-220 also…

20" nose might be so wide its cumbersome. And if the board’s that light, a nose like that will catch offshores and keep you from making a drop. 19" is already very wide and 18 should be enough to noseride anyway.

I doubt you’ll get it much lighter than 17 or so. I have a 9’10" from Epoxy Pro that’s 17…and they use all them new-fangled tricks like wet-out tables, heat, etc…If you’re ordering a Clark blank, using the epoxy won’t save you much weight over using poly. The real weight savings with epoxy is that the glass is so strong you can use truly leightweight blanks like EPS.

If you went with EPS, 14 lb is do-able. So is 3" thick…aren’t you in HI? Find out where CMP & Oneula get their EPS…

Bert, I was just stating what Greg had said a few months back about epoxy and standered foam. At the time I was looking into getting a board made with epoxy, and using supper blue, in order to make myself a lighter. At that time Greg L. had said that in order to use epoxy on standered foam you would have to go to one of the heavier blanks so you would not gain anything in doing it that way. As far as the way you described the only way epoxy well delam. As far as I know that is the only way a delam happens. All of the delams that I have ever seen have had foam stuck to the glass, or as you said a foam failure.

I built my cruiser out of the 10’7"H.

I’d say 23-24" wide. Like Benny said, I would not go 20" in the nose. Un needed weight, bad for off shore, harder to duck dive/paddle out…

Tail rocker and rail shape will have more to do with noseriding than nose width. See Tom Wegener’s article:

I think my tanker numbers are: 10’6" x 17.5"(N) x 24.5" x 14"(T) x 3.5"

PM me if you live on Oahu. A conventional foam clark blank or bennett blank would be pretty difficult to get a 14lb board of the dims you suggest. You would have to modifiy it big time to shave off weight to lighten that blank up. I am 220lbs and 76" and those dims are tandem/stand up paddle board territory. We are cutting foam in May for the summer. Are you interested in a 1lb EPS blank??

The board that I would recommend to you are made by Surftech. The first and all time favorite is the 10’ Infinity Rad Noserider, the board paddles easy, catches waves easy, is fast and very manuevble. The next Surftech board that I would recommend is the 10’ Bear Waikiki Special or 10’ Haut Cowell’s Classic if you want something a little thinner. For a 10’6 board thick to thin I would recommend both the 10’6 Mickey Munoz or the 10’6 Watercooler. All boards that I recommend are good for people in our weight range. I hope that this helps.

R-control has an EPS manufactring faciliy on Oahu. Check the website. r-control.com

Actually, I’ll be making the board myself so…thanks for the suggestions anyway!

Alloo,

Your actually suggesting import boards here??? Gotta say, you’ve got stones!

Stones indeed…SURFTECH SUCKS… sorry I can’t believe you would suggest such crap. Get a REAL board…from a REAL shaper…anything else is shite…have fun…
