16 Year Olds First Attempt 5'6" Fish Design Help Needed

And just to let you know(not bragging), I saw a guy ride my shaped board -a 5’9" tri fin winged swallow X 19" wide 11 1/4" nose 15" tail, pretty heavy vee up to about just up front of twins a bit… Anyhow, the guy was tearing it up right in front of me and I didn’t even know till he walked up on the beach! I then told him I’m the shaper, and he said you should make sum more.lol. Reason I’m doin another ! Lol.also,
A round pin I did(single fin) was 6 foot x 20" wide and the guys bro said he pulled off a 360!! I said noway, and he said yes way. When I saw and heard all of this I ordered a planer. And now I’m doin my own board… I’ll post pics when its done. Fyi- its gonna be a gunny short board for hollow 5-6 foot surf.

hi shapeaholic,

I measure tow based off of distance off the tip, instead of 1/4" like you said. 1/4" could be a lot or little tow depending on length of board or width. Too much could cause the board to plow water and slow it down alot. 3" off the tip is what I would do, but maybe someone on here has a better recommendation.

About quads being to drivey, it really depends on fin shap, size and placement, because they can be built really loose too.

Astevens - that’s possible about the drag… This is an area I’m still learning about. Luckily a friend who had exp glassed on the fins on my 5’9"-which had a 1/4" tow. but I will look into it about less tow on a longer board- thanks for info.

As for quads I never tried one. I just heard they tend to gen be more drivy. I don doubt they ca be designed to be loose either. I was just stating what guys have been saying in comparison with singles thrusters etc…
I geuss I need to try one?
