1956 US Olympic surfing team

I spoke to an 80 year old surfer today who told me that the US surfing team to Australia brought 2 paipo boards with them. He doesn’t know who owned the boards. I’m interested in finding out about the boards.

1956 - sounds like an Hawaiian rep. Anyone know of a contact who was on the team? PM’s welcome.

Update - this site http://www.surffestival.org/Wieland%20Shield/History.htm includes a more comprehensive list of team members. This page contains more names than the surfresearch site, but does not include Tommy Shroeder & Danny de Rego who feature on the surfresearch list. However, it does contain a Tom Shaeffer & Dan Durego.

Tim Guard has told me he took a paipo to Australia. The board was made by Joe Quigg and left at Freshwater. Dave Jackman who was also from Freshwater, in a recent Pacific Longboarder interview reported that he saw Tommy Zahn ride a paipo. The board that was described sounded like a Wally Froiseth style paipo. I've been advised that Wally Froiseth did not make Zahn a paipo, though Jim Growney recalls seeing Zahn ride a paipo stand-up.

I have been in touch with Tim Guard and had an e-mail passed on to Greg Noll. Does anyone know which of these other guys might still be alive and their whereabouts?

Taking another angle, the US swimmer Dick Cleveland was loaned a paipo made by Wally Froiseth. Cleveland came to Australia but it is not known if this board came to Australia or returned, if it came here.

Any suggestions or leads are much appreciated.
