Mark, you wouldnt bloody believe it , I found another 80s McCoy but its a ZAP.I went into the Aloha factory in Brookvale this morning to wish them a Merry Xmas and its there in the racks, great condition, no dings but no-one knew who owned it !! So they are still around.
I always check any antique shops I pass because I picked up 2 hollow boards and a mint Terry Fitzgrald from a shop on Phillip Island. I think the cost me $200 all up. Not many surfers will hang out in antique stores but its worth a look !

edit: Mark, did you have a squizz at www.soulsurf.com.au ? theyve got a heap of old singles, an MR, a mint Da Cat, a Balsa Brewer gun, heaps of boards. I have no affiliation with the site , its just a good site for picking up rare boards.
i got to ride a friends single fin mccoy nugget when i was in byron bay. i used to think they looked funny and different. but wow that thingwas fast. and manuverable. i wish i had one in my quiver. i think it was a 6’0
SURFFOILS - Mate I would love one of your fincams if you have any left! I’ve just gotten back from Holidays and seen your thread!! What an absolute beauty of a board you scored! I pretty much ride McCoy zaps all the time, I have a couple but not in the condition of the one you got. This is a fantastic era in Australian surfing, McCoy really was ahead of his time. I love single fins and was lucky enough to meet Cheyne earlier on this year. He was the man back then and still is now I reckon. I was stoked that he was so down to earth and pretty much just a cruisy Dad enjoying life! I’ll PM you my address a bit later. Thanks mate, and heaps of great waves to you.

It’s not a fantastic era as in gone…Mccoy is still actively making boards. The aussies in larger numbers should support him more instead of importing Al Merricks and the like from America. I laughed so hard when I saw an Aussie magazine with as many American based company ads as Aussie. Mccoy is about as international as you can get.
Its great to read your supportive and positive treads for one of surfings greatest shapers, he doesnt get
the respect he deserves in Australia generally due to a media that doesnt have an understanding of design,
or an ability to think for its self. His boards get ridiculed because they look thick and different while the same
people struggle to pick up waves or do two moves and then the wave moves on with out them and they
think they are ripping.
Think about all the great surfers he had riding for him in the seventies and there subsequent disappearance from
the scene after they stopped riding his boards.
I have huge repect for his designs and his ability to custom shape to my needs often requiring extended phone
calls and then producing quality strong boards that perform beautifully for yrs.
Happy xmas
True words. I think Geoff’s nuggets are one of the single most innovative designs of the last 15 years…maybe longer. Only folks trained to look at certain shapes as state of the art ridicule them. Also because he follows his own beam of light.
Hey Solo - Of course I realise Geoff is still making boards. 90% of my quiver are McCoys, I love em and respect Geoff greatly for the boards he does. All I was saying was that I love that late 70’s early 80’s era in his career and indeed Australian surfing at that time in general.

I knew thats what you were saying. I just wanted to give the old boy some more credit. Most of my quiver are Mccoys, then Horans and Forstalls. My magic board for the last four years has been a really odd looking 7’2’'.
Yeah you’re right Solo - How many Australian Shapers or Shapers anywhere in the world can lay claim to shaping for the President? How many Presidents or Prime Ministers actually surfed anyway? You could probably count them on one hand. A few other high profile surfers Geoff has shaped for are Damien Hardman, Margo Oberg, Pam Burridge, Col Smith and MR early in the piece I think.

Catch ya
Andrew
I used to have a partial list on my site it was like thirty…including the likes of Nat Young, Tom Curren, and many others. Amazing actually for someone you rarely hear much about from surfing magazines. Wonder what Nik Carroll thinks of that?
I haven’t stopped by Sways in awhile, and I’m glad I did! Cheyne has been my favorite surfer, since I was a grom in the early 80’s and I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for single fins, thanks to him.
BEAUTIFUL BOARD!!!
I have a great photo of one of his super wide tailed Zaps that I’m trying to post, but I can’t get it to work - can someone offer me some technical help, please? I took the photo as a grom in 1983, when Cheyne was in town for the Atlantic City OP Pro.
Thanks and nice find on that board - stoked for you!
If I remember correctly, I think you’re in Florida, right?
Will you be attending the upcoming Surf Expo show, at all?
If so, I’d love to meet with you and chat about the boards you’re carrying.
Thanks, and let me know, please.

I am planning on being there. There may be a Horan or two at Ricky Carroll’s booth. Pm me and we can exchange numbers so we can meet up. I tried to talk Cheyne into it, but he will not be over until the next month. He is in the process of opening a Sushi Bar to go with his already busy schedule and lots of kids.
Sounds great - I always make it a point to stop by Ricky’s booth and say hi to him and Chris Birch. I got to work with those guys last year, during the Board Build-Off - a great crew.
Also, can you give me some help on posting pics - I want to put up my pic of Cheyne’s wide tail, circa '83.
