good on ya Mark !
it’s a double foiled trailer fin , then , I take it ?
I look forward to seeing the completed single fin , too …is THAT one [the single] going to be a finbox one ?
…making fins is fun , eh ?!
cheers for the photo , mate !
ben
looks good really good
Yeah mate the single will be a finbox fin. I just got back now, the fin JUST didn’t fit and i couldnt find a file, even though i have a few at home. Oh well, i’ll finish it today. Im kinda glad it didnt fit, as i finally got my new fish into some decent chest to head high waves. Was a bit crowded, but i got a few good ones. Very fast, and the “looseness” is perfect, it turns where you want it to. Although it will be a while before i get the hang of it, i keep popping up a bit too far back, and miss out on the super speed. The trailer would’ve helped today too i reckon. Oh well, will try tuesday. Cheers and thanks to all who have given me advice about anything, im stoked!!!
Thanks skiny!, yeah chip, double foiled. Im pretty happy, because its such a small fin, it was easy to get no flat spot at all.
More photos ben!
The single fin is almost ready to go, i filler coated it last night, and i just need to sand the trailing edge ( there goes the nice glossy finish! ) where the resin dripped. Then, when i’ve glassed my 6’ single, and glassed in the fin box, i’ll drill the holes and finish the base off. Next fins will be thruster fins for our 6’8’’ BGT. Any dims ideas chip?? or anyone?. Im thinking of going a bit bigger than standard thruster fins, and a bigger board would need bigger fins??
P.S ben, i did 5 layers at a time, one coat clear, then another coat of tinted resin. Didn’t fully mix the resin tint, but there’s not much of a “swirl”.
…nice …I LIKE it !
It looks FUN , mate …let us know how that surfs, eh ?
what box is that [? a “probox” ?] , that it goes in ?
blue tints look nice in fins , eh ?
I think you might have inspired me to do a pair for my next ones for the bushfire fish , maybe , Mark !
[I still have some cloth [fin sized] cut up and waiting …just need to get some resin and some new tint first , at some stage in the hopefully near future ]
cheers again for the photos , mate !

Hi Beer fan,
nice fin, looks like a piece of jewelry when its held up to the light. looking foward to seeing the single fin when its done.
Poly or Epoxy?
What did you use to get the air bubbles out? a roller?
Poly mate, im a bit lost about epoxy, so poly is easy for me!. Yeah, i made up 3 homemade rollers, i should probably post a pic of them i guess haha. I just got a few 3/8 x 75? bolts, put them in a lathe and drilled a hole in them. Then i shoved a welding rod into the hole, and bent the ends around. Pretty crude, bet worked ok. There were a few dry spots in the fin, but nothing major. I also forgot to put a layer of lam resin down first, but it worked o.k. When i had finished, i placed some baking paper over the panel, and layed a good sized piece of flat flooring, with 2 bricks on top, and left it for about an hour. The panel ended up being perfectly flat. And the baking paper did not stick one bit.
Ben , i dont know if its probox . It fits fcs tabbed fins, but is just one long slot.
I’ll be trying out the trailer on my twin keel fish tomorrow morning. I haven’t really needed it yet, but it’s a waste not to try it!!. Will report on how it rides. Any ideas on what it will add/subtract to/from the board??
Hey Beerfan,
Nice first try should give us a photo looking down
tip to base so we can check your foiling over white background 4 contrast.
question did you layup the panel with a brush or roller?
Rod Finfektion
nice one beefan
let us know how it goes
those keels look good btw
Next fins will be thruster fins for our 6’8’’ BGT. Any dims ideas chip?? or anyone?. Im thinking of going a bit bigger than standard thruster fins.
Hiya Beerfan! I’d go with the sides at 4 7/8" and a 4 5/8" back fin. That will make the board more fun and less dragy then having 3 fins the same size. Cheers! Ps… your fin looks nice, good work!
I used a roller to lay it up. The foil is actually pretty good, if i do say so myself!!. The thickness is at the front of the fin., I will get a pic soon. It was easy to get no flat spots, because its such a small fin. Tried it out today. Didn’t like the way it rode at all. BUT, the waves were very small and full, so very slow, but the board didn’t seem “loose” like it usually does, or get around the wash. It felt “slow” and a bit stiff. I will keep it to try on our big guy tri, but i dont know if i’ll try it on the fish again any time soon. Its in the car anyway, so i can throw it on if we get some decent size steep waves.
Thanks josh, since i’ve finished the fish, the bug guy tri has been a bit neglected, but, it will get done!!.
Tried it on some chest high low tide steep waves last week. I think it helped me stay on the board!. The waves were steep and fast ( bodyboarders everywhere!! ). A few times the waves were too fast, and i had to pull off the back, or drop down and get hammered. Good to know i have a decent trailer fin for steeper waves.
so how did it go , Mark ??
…could you feel a bit of extra hold [for example]
off the bottom / off the top / in the tube[?] / paddling
[/ wiping out ? [hehe] ]
…cheers Mark !
ben
It definately added more hold. On waves like that ( i havent had many surfs on very steep waves with the fish ) i have found just the keels a bit wobbly, rideable, but they can be a bit unstable. With the trailer, it felt a little less loose, although it still turned very easy. Cant tell you about barrels, i have never been in a barrel, i never think about them, and i cant slow my board down if i tried haha. My mate, however, hadn’t surfed for 8 weeks or so, and first wave just dropped straight in. More than 10 years experience must count for something hey? haha.
P.S for some reason, my backhand surfing was better, more positive, like i would lean back into the wave, and it would actually turn into the wave haha, usually, on my back hand, i slowly rise up the wave, but with the trailer, it seemed to turn a bit quicker which i found odd.
