1st Shape

Could anyone give me some advice about what would be my best bet for my first project? I mostly longboard, but I’m open to creating anything that rides waves. I was wondering what blank would be best for me if I am going to be doing most of the shaping by hand (w/o power tools), just taking my sweet time. I just want to create a board of any sort, to get myself started. Thanks in advance.

Get a copy of the clarke catalog and pick a blank. There is a ton of choices for LB’s. I think the right blank would require miminal work and great returns. There is a ton of experience here and I am sure you will be recieving many suggestions as to exactly what blank you should use. It would help if you narrowed down what type of surf you will be using it in the most and also, do you have a modern or traditional approach to riding waves? Good luck and welcome to your new addiction. ed

new addiction is right. just finished shaping my first board. time to paint it up and then glass it. good luck in your shaping brother. peace Josh

P.S. on your first shape it’s alright to do it all by hand but I would get someone to skin it for me if I had no tools–best of luck to you —you will never be the same > Josh

I have a belt sander to skin it, but I am just weary of power tools for now, becuase they take off so much material in so little time, I jsut want to take it slow.

i would use a good, well sharpened stanley block plane to skin. you’re less likely to get dips and bumps than with your disc sander. that and some 40 grit paper and you should be cool.

Maybe a 9’5" S. It is a modern longboard blank and is close tolerance. I would stay away from a belt sander when skinning the blank. Unless you are VERY comfortable in using it. Don’t make a lot of unnecessary work for yourself trying to fix your rocker/foil, because of a slip of the sander. A block plane, surform, and long sanding block should do you right. Somebody posted a site where you could download the clark catalog. It is in a pdf format (you need acrobat reader to view it, which is a free download www.adobe.com. You might already have it.). I downloaded it and it is handy to have. I can’t remember the address, but if you check the achives it will be in there. Get some dimensions in your head and then check out the catalog.
