Is there a set dimension from the tail for a 2+1 set up on a shortboard say a 6'4''.Would it just be the same as a thruster set up or are there different things that come into play or can you stick em wherever you like. Also on boards like Neil Purchase Cuttlefish or similar how far is the widest point moved forward from the centre. Thanks
Neil Purchase Jr., long time proponent of the 2+1 set-up, typically uses 4"x4" front fins moved a tad further back then typical thruster, and a center fin box so the rear fin, typically 6" tall with a fairly upright template, can be ‘dialed’ in…fins work clustered closer together then a thruster set-up. WP is usually at center. NP Jr. got off the 2+1 train a while ago, however, and jumped aboard the quad express…
I rode a custom 2+1 some years ago for a bit, found it smooth and drivy on the forehand, not as good back hand, liked thrusters and quads better for their ‘all purpose’ qualities.
On the other hand, if you surf long point breaks on your forehand, definitely something you might consider trying.
Thanks for that ,good info and good advice.
Do you mean a 2+1 doesn’t like change of direction as much as a thruster.Couldn’t this be remedied by using a centre fin with less rake or even moving it further forward between the side fins
bigger back fin will always dominate, which provides the flowing drive of a 2+1.
nothing is going to hook up a change of direction like a bigger fin right on the rail as a thruster will, just the nature of beast…I rode mine with several different front fin sets and rear fins…the best it ever rode for my taste was when I had the fins pretty much size and position balanced like a thruster…so went back to a thruster
having a lotta fun lately, however, with a new 5 fin DT I’m liking as a quad, with a nubster fin for a trailer fin when it’s peakier vs walled up, which helps it claw a tighter curve back up the wall…
