I just got one of Greg’s blanks and have two questions.
1 Will I need to adjust thickness due to the buoyancy of foam?
2 How fine should I finish out the blank? (220 or finer?)

go on the thinner side for your rail volume. I finish using 120 grit screen and have no problems. You don’t need to go any finer anyway since the shaped blank will need to get some spackling or ultra light epoxy filler; and then you would sand that to a finer grit…
Adjust thickness down by 1/8".
my opinion is leave the thickness ,so you get a little more overall float roughly 5% more float but thin the rails ,coz you notice the float in the rails when you go to do a turn ,so keep em nice and low, almost to the point where you think the rails look ridiculous …
while were on the subject of rails and epoxy
i rode one of Mc coys 7’ surftechs today in perfect clean 3’ surf ,totally workable head high point break,glassy conditions…
VOMIT < the ugliest pig ive ridden for years ,it felt like a cork ,i was even having trouble sitting on it ,it wanted to pop out every time your weight wasnt right over the top of it ,i was actually out on my 9’ mal when this guy paddled out on one i was especially interested so he asked if i wanted a go i jumped at the chance…
the thing was slow ,especially off the take off, the bottom edge is to soft and has no realease ,every time you came off the top (when i could get it there in the first place) it would just hang up there unless you were right on the tippy tip tail ,then a little squirt …the board was light but surfed like it was heavy …
on my longboard ealier i was gettin vert and putting my whole board above the lip and poping out the tail on the way round ,i got a smoker on the nugget went vert but had no drive couldnt get half the board above the lip line then just kinda fell with the lip as the board melded into the lip and didnt wanna break free ,my shorty is 6’-9" and i know in the same spot i woulda got the whole board out or gone straight up and then fed the tail into the lip and busted out the back on the follow through ,another thing is for such a flat rockered board it hates the open face you cant get it out there coz its slow but then its hates the pocket coz its dead and fat and unresponsive ,geoff if your out there ,
man its one serious bad package ,i rode one the same last year but in polyester / pu it was way better ,this is just another example of something that works in polyester that wont work in eps /epoxy.
surftech you guys are clowns stop copying polyester /pu coz your gonna give epoxy boards a bad name …

Exactly what I’ve found with the Surftech/Boardworks boards. All are designed in polyester then molded in epoxy. It just doesn’t work. If your going to design something that is going to be molded in epoxy, prototype it in epoxy. Simple stuff that shouldn’t take a genius to figure out.
yea kinda frustrating for me whos built thousands and thousands of custom epoxies ,to then see surftech go and copy boards by shapers who have no idea…just because they know how to shape a poly .
MC coys surftech is the worst example of what not to do in epoxy…i cant believe not one person new enough to stop this monster ever getting to production…

Bert, great observation on the soft rails. I’ve handled a McCoy surftech and immediately noticed the softness all the way to the tail. I’ve never ridden any McCoy but Cheyne told me to have Geoff make the rails razor hard in the last 18". From other observations I’ve heard a 7’ McCoy, even in PU, would float a couple people. Really disappointing.
