2 layer cloth Technique

I’ve been doing my own glass jobs for about 6 boards now and have had somewhat of success. This one I wanted to make a bit lighter (I always seem to leave too much resin on the board) so I wrung it out good, but it left some bubbles in the rail within the 2 layers of 4oz. I’m wondering if it would work out if I laminated one layer at a time. Has anyone attempted this? And is this a good way to go? I seem to have trouble working the two layers at one time, and wonder if there is some drawback to doing them separately.

we did our first few boards this way and seemed to have no problems. the only thing was that we had a slight edge you could see along the laop from 2 layers. Now we just use a deck patch and wrap the rails with one layer from top lam , and one layer from bottom lam. But If you double up the wrap your rails should be Nice and strong. http://dirtyglassing.com

Stressing a planar material usually applies force at a right angle to the surface. Such a stress attempts to bend the material. Material on the forced surface attempts to compress, and material on the opposite surface attempts to expand. So strength for resisting such a force comes from three properties. 1. Ability to resist compression (compression strength) 2. Ability to resist expansion (tensile strength) 3. Ability for the two surfaces to resist sliding against each other (adhesion) Laminated fiberglass cloth is inherrently strong at resisting compression and expansion. It’s also strong at inter-layer bonding when laminated monolithically. This property is the very idea behind the development of fiberglass as a construction material. Monolithic pours of multiple fiberglass layers allows the fibers from one layer to interlock with fibers in adjacent layers. Curing layers independently separates them, and significantly reduces adhesion strength. It defeats the purpose of using fiberglass. Failure of the layer bond is responsible for most spider cracks and delams. Think about it.

Right on Noodle… I didnt know that. So after reading that i change my answer. Maybe it will work doing it in seperate layers, but a stronger bond will happen if layed all aat once… Cool stuff http://dirtyglassing.com
