Hello , Please can someone give me some advice about the lam coat . I just did my first board and the 2 layers of glass that I put on the top at the same time was a pain . Especally in the wind … Can I do them 1 at a time .?? Lam 1 wait for it to cure then lam over it again?? Do I need to do anything before re laminating over the first lam ? Sand?? I am also thinking of using epoxy on the next one.Is it the same for Epoxy . Thanks for all the help . Reading on this Forum really taught me a lot and helped me to get thru this first board. Don J.
Hey
When it’ windy outside, go windsurfing or kitesurfing.
Sure, you can lay up one layer at a time.
95% of professional glassers easily lay up 3 with no problems. Saves time.
But do what ya gotta do to insure a good glass job.
Hotcoat, like Lee said you can lay up 1 lam at a time. I have heard that that when you lam them together it makes a stronger bond. When I use to do some laming outside I just ran a nice bead of resin down the stringer and this tacked down the cloth. The only sanding you need to do is if you have anything sticking up that would hold the 2nd layer of glass off the deck. This would possibly cause bubbles and definitely would hurt the bond.
If you cut the 1st deck layer only to about the pin line or so, then the second layer is a full free lap wrap on to the bottom that only goes about 1 1/2 inches from the bottom rail you don’t run the problem of having to grind the seam between the 1st and second lam. If you do it one at a time, you have to cut strings, surform bumps and noogies etc. Lay the first cloth down in 4oz and the top layer in 6oz, wets out fine, just make sure you force the resin into the cloth. Strong lam no problems. Doing it this way, once you hot coat, you have a really smooth deck, hardly any sanding. You just sand the bottom lap, and gloss.
