I’m laminating a 10 ft longboard with RR epoxy and have a question regarding the amount of resin to use per side. Greg posted these guidelines:
These are estimates for total mixed material.
6’ and under - 9 -12 oz. bottom 12-15oz. deck
7’ and under - 12 -15oz bottom 15-18 oz. deck
(Epoxy beginners should add a couple ounces to these numbers).
8’ and under - 18 - 21 oz bottom 21- 24 oz. deck
9’ and under - 24 - 27 oz bottom 27- 33 oz deck
I’m doing 2x 6oz bottom and 3x 6oz deck. Anyone able to tell me apx volume to use for bottom and deck lams? I was not sure how the above amounts relate to the glassing schedule I’ll be using or if those amounts were geared more toward lighter lams (such as 1x 6oz bottom / 2x 6oz deck).
Next question: The blank is 2# EPS with a PVC stringer (SFoam blank). Can I install the finbox in the typical fashion (same as PU blank) or should I be using additional reinforcement similar to the techniques discussed in the recent thread which I assume related to lighter densities of EPS foam?
I just finished another epoxy over EPS. Its 10’0". Double 4 bottom, triple 4 top. Sealed the blank with epoxy & cabosil first. Then lammed on the deck patch (4 oz) and did the spray.
For both the top & bottom lam, I mixed 12 oz resin & 4 oz hardener (not RR, a 4:1 brand)- 16 oz total. I warm the resin first & it wets out like water. I had some leftover. Greg’s use guidelines are right on.
I set up ALL my eps boards with 2 sticks an 1-1/8"th apart. It traps the boxe and stabilizes it well, plus you haven’t broken the spine of the board by routing through the stringers

JimtheGenious- You mentioned not routing thru the stringer… I don’t think I follow- I am going to have to route the opening for the finbox right thru the stringer. =)
Nearly all baords, including mine, if they are not a double stringer need to be routed through. It is one of the weakest spots on any surfboard, that fails most often. Any board that has been ridden for any length of time will show stress lines in the front of the box. When I had my shop in Fla, I used to cap over the boxes after sanding with 2 layers of 6oz. and route out the cap after polishing. Now that I use glass shops it is impossible to put boards through the production phases twice. Now my boxes show fatigue like everyone elses
this was on a clark classic blank, but I just finished a 10’6"x18"(n)x24"(c)x16"(t)x8"(p)x3 5/8" w/ single 6oz bottom and double 6oz deck using RR epoxy.
bottom lam: 36oz
top lam: 48oz
hot coat: 18oz per side
fin box: 3 oz
leash plug: 3 tsp
pin strip: 3oz
gloss coat: 18oz per side
finished board 24 lbs w/ fin and leash. I’m sure I could have sanded down more to reduce weight but still nervous with the sander/polisher.
Well, Over the past 2 days I did the laminations, and actually ended up using just a little more than what you did, as I had a little more glass. I ended up using: 42 oz for the bottom and 60 oz for the deck. I had a tiny bit left over but not too much- just a little bit extra for safety… stuff is great!
Looking at the board this morning, I didn’t have any dry spots or any major probs… maybe coulda pulled a tiny bit more resin out of the cloth in a few spots, but I’m really happy with it as a first attempt at epoxy lamination. STOKED!!!
