2013 Burleigh Single Fin Festival

It’s amazing what these guys can do on old equipment, as usual Rasta nails it with style, one of my most favourite surfers to watch.

2013 Burleigh Single Fin Festival Video

I have to say, I’m a bit of a traditionalist and wasn’t taken with much of what I saw. I’d prefer to watch people adapting their surfing to suit the board, not just surf the way they always do on a board that’s just not suited to that style of surfing (IMHO).

Having said that, Rasta was a deserving winner, and I’ve always admired his style, which I would describe as ‘timeless’ in many ways. This is a good example of what I think is how a single fin should be ridden, today as it was in the past.

I watched the event over a couple of days and they scored some great waves for this contest, that film was not really indicative of most of the surfing that was happening and alot of surfers were keeping it real in the sense of the lasts days of the single fins rein. As all boards ridden had to be made pre 1985, most boards chosen to be used were early 80 style, interestingly the younger guys were in general getting it right as opposed to the older ones who may have tasted the tale end to that era, eg Occy struggled.

The single fin fits into that wave like a glove and when one hit the bank right it would reel down the line and the rider just had to hold a line and could easily get a multi second tube ride.

Rasta was riding a Murray Burton shaped Pipedream 6 channel, triple flyer pin about 6 ft long.
