22" wide?

I am making a big boy fish about 6’10" from a 7’9"E. I was planning on making it about 22" wide about 4" forawd of center and I cut the board out and it looks WIDE. It is for a guy about 200 pounds and moderate ability. Does 22" sound too wide for this type of big boy beginner fish?

22 is fine

that would make it equivilent to a 6’2"x 21" or a 5’6"x20"

I have a 6’4" fish thats 21 1/2" wide. I’m 138 lbs. and it feels just right. I would think 22" for a 200 lb. person would be ok.

dont freak…im in the process of making myself a 6’-4" by 23 1/4 by 1 7/8 and im 220 …im itching to get the thing in the water…

I’m glad this is a topic because I’m on the other end of the spectrum. I’m making a 5’10’ fish and right now its almost 21.75" wide. I happen to think it looks pretty good. It’s my first classic fish. I just assumed they should be wider because the design dictates a fuller outline. Right?

Hey

should be fine

I’m 155 lbs., sometimes ride a 7’9" x 22 at Ocean Beach SF up to a foot overhead, or South Swell Waddell couple of feet bigger.

Just gotta weight the inside rail.

After skinning it and smoothing it over a bit it is starting to look right. My next dilema is foiling it without creating alot of extra rocker and wthout taking alot off the deck. Any suggestions? Thanks for all of the previous replies.

You can thin the nose from the top, you just don’t want to mill it to far on the rest of the deck were it will be bearing weight. You could also put a nice thick beak on it too. I made a 6’4’’ out of the same blank and it’s 23’’ wide, crazy fast board.

a very important part of the procrss is to practoce not judging the outcome prematurely…a work in progress should flow dont stop the flow and judge every step along the way… finish the job then judge it after riding it for a week or two…stopping to asess at every step will give you a perspective crowded with input and un able to see the whole picture…stand back and look but dont worry …Curtis Mayfield wrote the song “Dont Worry” …ambrose…don’t worry you will worry the board ill…
