Hey guys, this is my second attempt at a surfboard, last one came out not too bad.
A question is about the resin used for the fin plug installation - what do I mix with it?
Im installing Shapers S-Plug, which is post-glass.
Is Talc comparable to q-cell, what else is there to use?
Also, when doing the lamination, how can I avoid the cloth getting lumpy when I do the laps? I’ve made the cuts but there still seems to be a few bunched bits.
What I use for fin plugs is either resin without any additive (plugs that sit very tight into the holes like FCS Fusion for instance) or resin with fiberglass powder in it for the others. No, talc is not comparable to Q-cell. Q-cell are glass or plastic micro balloons. They will lighten resin but have very weak strength properties. Talc is used to make resin easily sandable but it is not very interesting otherwise. besides, it turns resin a grayish color.
Ground or Milled Fiberglass with a drop of white pigment is most commonly used. Some shops keep around White Gel-coat for this purpose. And then mix with a little Ground Fiber. The same can be done with Epoxy. Everything mentioned in the posts above can be done and have seen all of the above done in one Pro Glass Shop or another at some time. But Ground Fiber has became a “norm” in most shops. Stronger for any Insert, be it A longboard box, FCS plugs or leash cups. Anything that goes under the glass is fine with resin alone or resin and Cabosil. Lowel
