My youngest “Tyler” and I just finished shaping his 7’ mini longboard and here are some pics of the airbrushing he decided on. He loves Bob Marley. After another coat we will be glassing this week. I’ m very proud of him, he’s doing a great job.
Let me be the first to say that is f-ing awesome! I can only hope when I am a parent that my offspring enjoy this hobby as much as I do.
Thanks Shwuz,
This is his first full attempt at making his own board ( with my help ). He had it all planned out, 7’ X 18" X 2 1/4 " single concave to a slight vee in the tail and just a single fin. This is a lot of fun building this with him. More pics to come after glassing.
Tom
Just finished glassing the bottom, the kid is a natural, not bad for 12 years old
Thomas,
Awesome stuff!! Theres nothing like shaping and glassing surfboards with the children. Glad to see others of Swaylocks sharing the stoke with the kids…
Bob
Tyler you might be Tom’s best student yet! Board looks like it will be a blast this summer! Love the colors. Great job! But you know what this means… now Tom can put you to work in the sweat shop making boards all day!
yeah thats awesome. cant wait to pass down my knowledge to my offspring when i have some. board looks sweet too!
What’s his name? By the looks of things, he’s maybe the coolest guy ever on Swaylocks. Looks like a Pro.

EP - You seem relaxed considering the fire nearby. I hope you stay out of danger.
What a stoking thread! Hard to tell who’s more proud, you or Tyler. Both of you deserve our kudos.
Awesome work! Looks like he can glass better than I can too. Did you tape off the stringer though?
Thanks Dean,
No we didn’t tape off the stringer, it was getting way past his bedtime so we had to cut corners, never had one de lam before, but if it does we just make another one
Tom and Tyler
Thanks Mike and Everyone
I just showed Tyler all the great comments and he is one proud little kid. He will be glassing the top this weekend with help from me and I will get a few more pics. Tyler now understands why I’m always on Swaylocks. Thanks for the inspiration everyone, and your right Mike I’m very proud of Tyler.
Thank you Tom and Tyler
I think you started this with your boys Bob. Thank you
Tom

Way to go Tyler! That board looks great. I can’t even imagine what he’ll be doing when he’s, oh, 20 years old.
Does he have a special respirator? My little helper (llilibel aka Isabel) always wants to help and is bummed when I have to kick her out when things get toxic. He she is wet sanding…
Your daughter is beautiful. when she’s 10 she will be a master board builder. The respirator is from Sherwin Williams Paint store, they seem to run small and adjust to Tyler’s head perfectly.

My 10 yr old son, Cain does some sprays on my boards. He has been doing more and more recently and I just shaped Tom Carroll a quaddy and Cain did him his version of the TC stripe…He has also done a few shapes, we did a reshape a while ago and then he finished a machined blank for himself which turned out great, he proudly showed it off at the Aussie Fish-Fry and was even interviewed and is now on the dvd…My Dad made board too so I guess its 3rd generation for us…( although my Dad died before I ever knew him so no influence there but must be in the genes …) …wish I knew how to post some pics of his efforts…it is very cool to share this with my son as well as to be able to go surfing together on boards we both shaped for ourselves…not too many father sons would do that I reckon…
