This SOOO reminds me of the Waynes World movie, when they are “subliminally” alluding to sponsors after selling out…Love it!

This thread is one of the best contributions I’ve seen in quite a while. You’ve raised the bar.
Bill
i tried this a while back with some automotive lacuer. looked good, but i think my spray skills aren’t top notch and i had a tail pad come off, due to the clear coat not adhering to the laquer - any tips on what i might have done wrong?
how many coats of clear does it take? or is it a one shot deal?
Useful, complete and actionable. Nice information Resinhead.
Mr P Adgenda, Don’t really know what to say. Only one guy I make boards for uses a tail pad, and hasn’t had any issues yet…err usually the boards break first.
I have UPOL’d clear coated boards that are now 5 years old and still doing the perfectly shiney thing…so if its a durability test, then so far the UPOL brand is winning.
I usually try to shoot it all in one blast. Fog it on to a tack ( the 2 pack will almost kick instantly) Then come back with the top coat. Try to wet it out enough that the spray path flow with the next, and the over spray has a wet place to land and blend in…but not so much it sags on the rails.
Shooting a surfboard shouldn’t be that big of a deal, all surfaces are shot flat, and most surfces are pretty much flat…so you really have to try to make it run or sag. Look if a guy can paint the vertical 12’ x 35’ surfaces of a school bus or a semi tractor trailer, everybody here should be able to shoot a flat 7’ x 20" pool toy.
OOOH, Thanks for asking
It’s a a quality 3M gun. The guns are cheap. it’s the cups and stuff that will get ya. But I don’t like cleaning guns, or having to bath in laquer thinner or acetone. Everything on the gun in clear plastic is disposable and replacable…
Tenover…“Always use quality 3M products…ask for them by name at your nearest retail outlet”
More importantly, what brand of beer to you drink while spraying and how do you get it through the genuine 3M mask? Mike
To the people asking about Resinheads gun,
Ive been looking for a mid range gun for myself, and looked into his recommendation. I found it on the 3M collision site. Runs around 130$. Heres the link to the 3M page:
Im most likely going to end up buying a 50-80$ gun from autozone, ill put up a little post reviewing my compressor setup, dryer, filters, all that jazz if people are interested.
EDIT: rooster, i have the full respirator for organic materials and hazerdous chemicals. You can put a straw through the bottom for your drink (PBR) needs.

Angus,
You’re not old enough to be answering that question yet! Hah! Nothing but soda pop for you! Mike
You laid it out nice and simple. All the talk about clear coats on Sways over the years. It’s about time someone posted up the process… There are lots of good guns out there. It just depends on your budget. Don’t buy a compressor that you have to wait on.
Ok so here the morning after picture. Shows how the clear coat sanded up with the 500 grit sponge. I tried to get the angle of shine so you can see how it should lay up. All it need now is the polish out. An argument could be made to leave it as is in a semi gloss look?
I need to do the bottom before the polish out …stay tuned.
I changed out my slippers for KM.
Anybody ever clearcoat with plain old lacquer? They used to do cars with it before urethane came out. I use it all of the time in my furniture shop.
Its cheap and easy to use. You can do multiple coats in one day.
Lacquer is really brittle, and doesnt bond well. At least on cabinets, if it is going to get impact, catylized lacquer, two coats only. Regular lacquer can be built up with miltiple coats, but it it is going to get abuse, it doesn’t last.
I use Sherman williams catylized lac. applied with an HVLP turbine spray system. Have done outdoor yard furniture with no problem.
I was mainly just curious. Have used it as a speedspray (low sheen) with no problems. Never tried to polish it on a board.
I also glossed using Dupont Chromaclear Auto clear and it worked unreal. Polished like a dream but expensive.
To me if you are doing poly boards I would just stick with hand gloss with Reichold resin. I can’t speak for epoxy as I don’t use it.
Yes. If it is “Acrylic” lacquer. All others, Production, Bar-Top etc no matter how “water-white” they are out of the can. are UV sensite and yellow fast. Even to the point of disentegrating in constant UV. Don’t let the word “Acrylic” fool you; They are not water based. Arylic Lacquer is just that; Lacquer base with Acrylic added. Ever see the clear coat on an 80’s model car or pick-up peel or dissolve. Same stuff. Lowel
So what did the Dupont stuff cost?? By the quart etc?? Is it 2–1 or some other proportion?? Did you use an accelerator with it?? Lowel
Used to spray the old Urethane 2-Pacs from Omni and PPG on sailboards while I was on Maui. In a small room the size of a shaping bay. No exhaust fan. Just a resipirator and a Tyvek suit. Doesn’t take much time to satuarate those charcoal filters. I use a Quality Binks product, thank you. So in no time at all if you weren’t careful you would be high, delirious , pukin’ sick or dead. Lowel
All these boards where done with Speed Spray, 3 coats each side, wait 24 hours compound and polish. the boards are a mix of poly and epoxy. You can get a gallon of Speed Coat at Fiberglass Florida for $45.00 , use a Harbor Freight HVLP gun
Hey RH! I remember the thread about glassing in a driveway that was on Sways of recent. There was lots of talk about the smelly Poly fumes. So you using some green 2-PAC made outta Wesson Oil or something?? Or Do you live in Pacoima where every other drive way has got some Cholo doing bondo and spraying primer. You are either getting away with it or people don’t notice because the whole neighborhood smalls that way. Organic Pacoima. It’s a good step by step you have done here. I just don’t understand why all these greens bitch about the smell of poly but are willing to put on a suit, hood and a repirator to spray a “high solids VOC” L
