30th birthday board

ok guys ive been promising the build report on this one, i managed to hand over the present last friday at a bonkers party and he was well and truly stoked to get it… complete surprise he had no idea.

so i started by making a blank from low density eps and blue styrofoam. the shape is a complete experiment and as soon as it gets in the water ill give ride reports.

this blank was then given a planshape and the edge covered in a further strip of blue foam.

this edge was then covered with a piece of 6mm ply

i then used the surform to make sure the foam was the same thickness as the rails

i then cut some strips of sapele into 3mm x 50mm legnths which were glued together with 5min epoxy

the deck and bottom skins were then clamped to the foam blank using all of my clamps!

i had hours of fun trying to ensure they glued up flat and true and got quite a good result in the end.

Yeah??

…and then???

…suspense

then the rails were built up in strips of sapele and cork with an outer layer of sycamore. unfortunatly i didnt take any images of the process but i did when it was done. i then added nose and tail blocks which were made from layers of walnut and purpleheart.

i also had a little accident with the stanley knife whilst cutting the cork… very painful and not very clever, a trip to hospital and a finger that wont bend is the result but at least i got the board done on time!

so it was then finish sanded and ready to lam.

i did the laminating with rr and this was kindly allowed to happen in my girlfriends front room!

it then came back to work to be sanded before going to my dads garage for the poly gloss coat.

i also added a leash loop which didnt come out great but definatly something i want to get the hang of.

then i routed for the finbox which sits within the blue foam ‘stringer’

so there she is,

thanks a million to you all for all the inspiration and advice
