Hey guys, I discovered something purely by accident today that I thought was worth sharing. Did a deck lam with UV cat (first time) works fantastic! Ok the deal was I taped off the bottom 'cause I had been having trouble with strings so I did a cut lap. Came out really nice. What I discovered was that when I was sanding the little imperfections and lap edge my 80 grit sanding block gets loaded up rather quickly. In a fit of disgust I picked up my 4 in 1 file (little file you get at the hardware store…coarse/fine /both flat and rounded on the same tool…6" long or so) and began hitting the high spots… To make a long story great …it worked like a champ! Coarse/flat knocked down any imperfection on the rails and I followed with the fine/flat and really smoothed it out. Hit the lap line with it and it was unbelievable. when it got a little resin load I swished it in some acetone and kept on going. For those who are still having problems with laps and bumps you need to try this! Just a good experience I thought I would share. Krokus
Been using them on laps since 1962
is there a trick to not hit the foam when cleaning up free laps?
Howzit Krokus, Used one for years, Now I use a sanding block that’s slightly curved with 50 or 36 grit paper. Aloha, Kokua
Howzit again Krokus, 1 reason I stopped using a rasp is they rust real fast here on Kauai, even though it would soak in acetone when not being used.Aloha, Kokua
find yourself a good sheffield file it will clean up even the worst lam job But the real deal is to wet a piece of white sand paper 40 grit shake it a few times then sand the lap each time you wet it you can sand about a foot of lap. But dont leave it too wet or you will pick up yellow spots on your lap line ( if your lap is thick file it down first)
kokua, Ive had the same problem... one easy solution has been to keep some anti-rust paper wrap/plastic bags around the shop. Real simple, cheap and works perfectly for metal tools, machine parts, guns, knives, etc. Here
s one of many examples… http://www.vcicity.com/how_VCI_works.htm
Howzit Dale, A pair of weiss scissors I bought came wrapped in in anti rust paper, but it just seemed to slow the rust down at first. After 30 plus years on Kauai you just learn to deal with the dreaded rust cancer. Some days my hygrometer reads 110% humidity, and that’s a lot of moisture in the air. Aloha, Kokua
