4 waves, 3 broken boards...

Sheesh… just watched the Surfline video of the Saturday 12/20/14 Mavericks swell event.  Famous guy Jamie Mitchell caught 4 waves and broke 3 boards.  The only other time I’ve heard of a guy’s board just buckling and breaking on a wave was Ian McDowell (Lavarat) @ Ocean Beach.

“I went back out on a brand-new 9’10” and took one that was not as big but more west,” Mitchell said. “I made the drop, went into the bowl but caught an edge and ate it again. There goes the 9’10”. I went back out on a 10’2”, and got one wave on it. Then I got another wave on that board, got a great entry. Everything was going great but the board buckled and broke under my feet on the face.”

It’s a nasty BIG wave… it’s amazing people surf it! Probably a drop off, or canyon…think about a swell hitting the shallow shelf…that wave, I think, folk’s would like to believe is safe… but it’s not… I recall two surfers died out there. Who knows maybe more?

Lavarat breaks more boards than anybody i know. We are not talking potatoe chips here either.
