I recently made a board and glassed it at 6x 6x6 and it felt very heavy and stiff. It probably was my lam being too thick and my HC being thick. So now I’ve gone off the deep end and decided to only do one 6oz on the deck. I’ve heard that some of the pro’s boards glassed really light have only a 4oz deck. So I decided to do kind of that and make it 6oz. But I figure that a I’m only losing 2oz on the deck from a 4x4. My question is, am I going to have problems? Part of my reasoning is that the 4oz that I have isn’t wide enough for me to wrap my laps like I’d like to. The board is 6’x 21"x 2 5/8". I know that the 6oz deck is going to be weaker and not last as long, but has anyone ever done this? What were your thoughts about it?
If you want to make a very light glass job, just do it its nice to feel the diference(huge diference)...you always learn. I really love very light boards...you fell like surfing on the foam...more responsive. But they dont last long , and I have no sponsor :)
Why not 4+4 x 4 ? Just laminate the cloth kind of dry and you can get a light board that will last much longer than a pro board.
just my opinion
good luck
thanks Horsemouth, I may do a 4x4. It just doesn’t wrap the rails like I want. The cloth is only like 23" wide and it kinda bugs me not having my rails wrapped good. I guess if all else fails and I do the 6oz and it gets beat up, I can always make another one!!! good excuse to make a new one.
I have a 7’10" semi-gun that I did a single 6 oz. deck on it, and I’ve been very pleased with how it’s held up, even with a lot of use. Make sure you don’t overshape the deck or use uber-light foam, tho… and of course your mileage may vary!
if the foam is of good density, a 4 x 44 glass job is quite sufficient. By the way, i like a strong glass job, but, yeah, you can go lighter and get a good compromise of light weight ( manouverability ) and strength. I have a 4x44 + 4oz patches for front and back feet, and it is quite light, however, where my feet go has 12oz all up, which is plenty strong.
perfect combo, just dont hit the weave when sanding…be careful when doing your ding repairs.
happy riding.
Thanks all. Since this is just a summer board, I’m not worried if it gets too thrashed. I am excited to get it finished and tested. I have the boxes set and will lam a patch over them this week. Hopefully I’ll have time to finish it before this memorial weekend. Not going to rush anything at this point. I’m pleased with how everything is comming along. It feels light but solid. I’ll post some pics once I get a chance. I set it up as both a quad and a single fin. I really wanted to try it as both just to see what it would ride like so I slapped both in. This is my third board start to finish and can already see progress. Thanks to Sways and all the people here.

ha ha, yeah right. I say this before every board I make for my self…Then I find myself at 2am doing a hot coat or something and using the hot box after every process.
All the best!
