I was wondering if anyone could comment on their installation. Is their kit necessary or can they be installed without? I was thinking about giving them a try on my next project.

I installed them using the router jigs they supply - very good and easy installation. Fins really good too - more people should use them!

Ive done it freehand with a router no problem. Pretty simple actually and a good fin system.
Freehand? J. Troy must have a steady hand. I used the jig George provided and had no problems. George, however, forgot to send the plates that allow one to change the cant on the fins, and the weights that keep the bases from floating in the resin. I used a long wood clamp to weigh down the bases, and am still waiting for the extra plates.
So far so good on the fins, although they don’t rotate as far as Edge fins. Fascinating though, how much of a difference a couple of degrees of toe-in makes in the behavior of a board.

I had the install kit but George lent them to someone else who refused to give them back…so I had to freehand it. Not too bad and i came pretty darn close on the placement.
I put a fin in the plug and eyeballed the placement and traced the inner hole, after cutting that out put the plug back in to check placement and cut any adjustments needed then traced and routed the outer hole.
I like the 4way system it gives alot a versatility especially when your trying to dial in a shape.
I agree Oregon - it was a real eye opener for me …the sensitivity of toe in. 4wfs is an excellent way of getting this exactly right for your board and conditions…i’ve been experimenting with placement and you can change a dog into a board that flies just by moving the fins 2 mm (there’s a big difference with just 1 mm!).
They’re the only removeable system i want to use now - fin placement seems is such an important variable …with other fins you’re just stuck with your original idea…could it be that you were close but not quite there ? if your fins are stuck in one place you’ll never know.
in comparison with the "edge " system… -does this also allow you to move your fins up and down ( I tried to get a set but their “sales team” seem to have a very “relaxed” attitude…ie not bothered at all)

Edge fins only allow adjustment of tow angle.
I appricate you all at least comparing Edge With 4way, good for 4way to try even more! Myself and my brother invented Edge Fins while working at Hamilton’s glass shop. During our extensive work with the tow board crew and fin placement, tow, cant and foils we found the most noticeable change to the boards performance was with the tow!!!

Yeah, amazing how a tiny fraction of an inch in tow makes a difference and how too much or too little can make an otherwise good board into a dog or vise versa.
Email me, I might be able to dig something up, subject on getting a lift to france
I haven’t tried moving the fins forward or back, but now I’ll have to try it. Single fins with boxes, now there was a difference in performance, but you could move them what, four inches or more depending on the box? The 4wfs give you a minute amount of play forward and back, but maybe that’s enough…?
As for Edge fins “relaxed attitude,” well, it is Kauai. My experience with Clyde was fine. The fins arrived promptly and Clyde seemed quite friendly.
yep clyde was friendly — just not very keen on making a sale!
Sorry to act the Dr Frankenstein on this thread, but I’m struggling to winkle the installation PDF outta the 4WFS website.
Will someone point me in the right direction please?
The new website doesn’t work fully yet by the looks of it. I emailed Dean. Tried Firefox and IE and neither downloads the install instructions when link clicked.
hi Guys,
we have just launched the "new look" www.4wfs.com web-site, there are a few teething issues, so if u need anything just email us directly at info@4wfs.com and we'll sort u guys out with the info u need.
the follwoing link that is on our site is :
http://www.4wfs.com/products/otg-box-install
this however is NOT the full installation guide...
We hope to have this up asap on the site in the next few days.
Thanks for your support,
Deano
hi HerbB,
to answer your original question,
It is HIGHLY advisable to install 4 ways using the perspex installation jig plate/kit and sponges provided with each set of boxes to allow for the most acccurate placement of your fins.
Obviously, you could do it manually if time and care is taken, but we all know by now that it is 1mm that can make a big difference to the board's performance...
At least with 4 ways u can rectify almost all movements and scenarios to maximise the board's performance after it is made...
Please feel free to email me diretcly if u have any queries whatsoever, i'll gladly assist u in anyway possible.
ps: we have some exciting new releases/features coming out in the next few months (but that's another discussion...).
Regards
deano
