5 2 fish???

Here’s a 4’7 I just made, my first shape.

Originally looked quite similar to your template, but at 22.5" wide was a little too much for me; I shaped it down to about 21". We’ll see how it works out.

I dont think i could handle the width/thickness on that template. I’m just too short and too light. Someone bigger than me could probably take advantage of it though. I’d say go for it.

I’d personally like to see more in the shorter/wider category.

Wow, did I really post that without any verbs?

Yeah, that’s the ticket–be sure and post up a riding impression–how far away is water time for it?

I’m 6’2" and 210 lbs.

And the waves here are meek and mild. And I skateboarded for centuries and surf pretty front foot–had envisioned my front foot at or just ahead of the wide point and my back right at leading edge of decent sized keels.

Wondered about bottom contours and rails, stuff like that…

thought I posted those questions but was running out the door to work…

thanks bro

Goes to show how much difference weight/height of a rider can make a difference in a board.

Your height/weight is a littel different than my 5’8" 130 pounds

I’m pretty new to this, but maybe i would start with a single concave for a little lift?

put VEE in back so you can put this fish on a rail and turn it…

Hi Janklow, I’ve just found this thread, I’m asking you 'cause as you have suggested in other thread, I’m studying fish designs for my customer. How big can one push a small fish board? I’ve seen many really small fishes around, aren’t they too short for a bigger guy? For example: a 5’5" x 22" x 3" twin keel can hold a 5’10" x 180lbs guy? How big can you get with it for a surfer this size/weight? Wont it be too shorty for a acceptable paddling response?? Consider that the given surfer is out of shape… and the waves here are crowdy.

Thanks again!

J.

Well, bro, as far as the paddling, I think the main problem with the 5’2" fish would maybe be standing up. I made my template really wide and thick, like 3.5 inches, something like that.

I’m gonna make one for myself probably some day.

I put a 5’10" fish template on the other thread (for you to use if you want–just have half of it printed up to real size at a print shop–should be cheap) Check out the tail rocker.

I have a 6’2" one drawn if you want it.

janklow,

I like your units of measure for volume. 5-2 pretty short for the average rider of your size I think. Depends on how GOOD you are. Also consider age, injuries, line-ups full of riders on 9-6 es. I think it’s going to paddle lousy unless you wear fins and knee ride it.

5-5 and three inches thick will work for a 180 guy that is fit, can paddle, and surf pretty well.

EPS will help with the floatation/paddle issues a bit on smaller boards. Mike

4’11" backbreaker …

Word — but it’s an experiment and the EPS will be cut from a billet which is cheap – cost of foam will be like $20

I made it 3.5 thick and 23 wide and really flattened the rocker to nose 2, tail 1.35 - moved the WP up so the planing area is the same as the 5’10" and 6’ fish I have drawn, and the volume is actually up–my paddle will enter ahead of the WP, so there’s that

I figured I’d down the rails a bit, concave it a bit, and have vee out to a slight concave flare in the tail

With volume at 55 liters, I think it might work–definitely would be fun to mess around with on small days, which is the fallback plan–small days here means like literal knee slappers–wading out!

Oh the beers thing is just APS3000’s deal–Nev Hyman’s software, from what I understand–but Jimmy Freese answers questions about it here

that APS3000 thing is the bomb and free at APS3000.com loads quick too!

the kid I made it for …it was definately more HIS size ! …

what is the website that shows Derek Hynd with , from memory , a 5’2 fish , on the south coast of N.S.W. [Australia] …anyone remember ?

…the photo is here at Sways SOMEWHERE …

cheers and goodnight from me !

…THANK you , "advanced search " facility here !!

And , thanks for THIS thread , Antsville !

here’s the link to the board … it’s a 5’3" , in fact !

http://www.bushrat.com/page/fish_surfboards.html

Check it: Hynd recites fish features that define the glory (straight rails, twin keels, etc) whilst holding micro fish with wing in rail!

Nice fish aint they–thanks for links chipper, ants

ok im bored to day and thought of with some extar foam makeing a board and do u think this is way to small for me right now its 4’ by 21" and its 2"1/2 thick

Janklow

Is 23" not a bit too wide for you, isn’t it better to make the rails a bit thinner? That will let you surf it when conditions are better then expected.

I’m just 195# and 6’3" and a half, riding a 5’5"x22". Sometimes when the waves get a bit power it starts feeling to big. I ride it from knee high to well overhead. In fast long bottom turns it gets a bit whigly.

I just paddle two strokes to catch a wave.Try a concave in the nose and keep the rails straight in the nose.

Making the tail a bit wider and rounder makes it more skaty.

Just a few thoughts of mine, but don’t let it lead you. You drew a nice board.

I’m sure it’s gonna be a nice one to ride.

Hey

Well… I surfed a 23" wide Al Merrick funboard in head high and liked it pretty well, but I might go down a half inch

The rail profiles I didn’t really work out–I think those are just the default

I like the outline too–I really like your turtle though–I wish there were more pics of it (hint hint)

Hope it helps…

Just do it!!!
