5-fin bonzer

i’ve been thinking a lot lately about attempting a bonzer. there was a thread awhile back where manny (Mandala Custom) mentioned a 7’ x 20.5" x 3" diamond tail bonzer. i think i’m gonna do it in mid-july when i get back to the states. anyhow, having never shaped or ridden anything even remotely like this…i’d REALLY appreciate some input on rocker, which blank to start with, etc…

Hello Soulstice

There is another community that are Bonzer specialists.

http://www.bonzer5.com/Pages/Frameset_Community.html

I know that you might have a bit of better luck over there.

Pinliner is Pete from Moonlight Glassing and his son is Tri-fins-are-dangerous (He is one there all the time). They deal with Malcolm all the time and have the skinny.

I can tell you that there is very slight forward concave and countinous rocker on mostly what he is doing with the 5 fin models.

I would get the exact rocker dims from them.

Cheers

Check the Bonzer under Retro Models...
Theres a video describing it

I don’t see a bonzer on the Channnel Islands website. I see a single fin with a bonzer-like bottom. Can you steer me in the right direction?

Its pretty cool.

Thanks Basswave,

I saw that clip already. Really nice stuff. SMOOOOOTH and fast…

I have a bonzer-5 shaped by Malcolm that is almost exactly the size you are thinking of shaping. If I can be of any help in measuring it or whatnot, please let me know. I have some pics up at the url below and can take more for you if you’d like. I’m in nor cal (Pacifica) but if our paths cross, you’re welcome to try the board out for size and to see how it surfs.

…hey MaraboutSlim, could you do me a favour? -measure the 4 sidebites…base, length, rake, form, etc also thickness, rigidiness, foil (type)all…

thanks

nice lookin’ board you’ve got there, rich. i’m most curious about rocker and the precise location, size, toe-in, and cant of the fins. i’m going to start cruising the Clark catalog and see if i can find a good starting point for this thing.

I’m not a shaper myself (still in the “absorb all info” phase, thus my addiction to this website!) but I’ll do my best to measure appropriately for you guys. I’ll have to borrow a micrometer and some calipers to measure thickness of the fins and the board and then get back to you guys. I think I have a straight edge long enough to get some decent rocker specs, too.

it looks like my starting point is going to be either a 7’4"R or a 7’5"A…any opinions on which one and rocker modifications would be groovy…thanks!

Soulstice. These photos are of a 9’ Bonzer. Sounds as if you are looking at something shorter.

The fins are Redex Bonzer. Licensed from the Campbell brothers. platty.

Nice board, Does it have the double concaves though?

Hey Josh. Yes it does. But it is very subtle.

Nice Platty, what size is that???

I’m primarly ride pulled in heavly rockered LB’s and since we are on the Bonzer subject.

I have a question about dimensions as well.

I’m waiting on Malcolm to get back to me on certain dimensions that he wanted to talk to me about so I’m curious what other Bonzer riders thought of them.

14.25 tail rounded pin

21 wide

12.5 nose

3" thick

Rider

5’11"

191 lb

What do you folks think?

Sound reasonable?

…what length , bassy ?

ben

Ops…I kooked.

7’6"

The basis measurements are 9’ x 22 1/4" x 3" I don’t know the nose and tail measurements. If you want to know, let me know, and I will get them for you. This board belongs to a friend.platty.

Thanks Platty…From those dimensions it sounds like something I would ride.

Looks great.

Question for you, might I ask…Do you fell in a board that length that you can feel the effects of the Bonzer configuration?

Peter from Moonlight sent a couple of 9’0"s to Billy Hamiliton down on the islands and I guess he loves them.

Curious on another opinion.

Hey Basswave. I have not had a ride of this board. If you go to the link above, I’m sure the owner will be happy to fill you in on the board. His user name is

“The Kalakau Kid” platty.
