Hey out there. I’m going to embark on a shaping job. It’s a noserider templated from a bing. I never done true 50 50 rails before. Anyone have any resources or tips ? I’m thinking you do top and bottom bands in the same manner. The bottom has belly. Thanks for any help. I did a search and found some tips. But different steps
Have you read - Bill Barnfield’s lb rail post yet? I over looked it, and man - it covers a lot more than I realized! I’m going to try it myself. It also gives hints on how to run your pp - which is something I really need help on. Run a search.
50/50 rails are exactly what it is. The rail is turned over on bottom and top to meet at the middle 50%. But the long board I borrow from my friend has 50/50s, but it kinda tapers in nose/tail…in other words it is fattest at wp, and from there it progressively fades out the tips…I thought? Does that sound right? I haven’t built a lb yet, but that is my game plan. But I prob will do 60/40s and pinch it out…I don’t care for blocky rails much.
Yes. He gives a ton of info. I have it in two binders. But nothing on the fifty fifty. I may just go 60 40 to make it easier to ride for the customer. Thanks.
I prob am gonna do 60/40s, but 50/50s are even - sit deeper in the water… if your customer is stuck on 50/50s check out some surf shops to look over rails…take special note of tip ends also… fyi I was occasionally borrow my friends Jacob’s lb, and it has 50/50s…but im not positive it tapers like I said? Maybe someone will chime in? Sadly my friend gave it to his bros down south…the 60/40s will be close. Also, a bit more updated. But id double check w customer.
I found a good description here in the archives! You just draw a pencil line down the sides of entire tail dead smack dabble in the middle of rail… then turn the top and bottom rails equally to pencil line. Sand/ screen out pencil marks last.
At this point, one can pinch them out… not sure how to go about doing ? I hope someone chimes in bcuz I am interested in 50/50s.
That’s pretty much what I was thinking …basically putting rail bands on deck and bottom. I have two boards with fifty fifty rails so I’m going to study them. Thanks for the help and if I find out anything new I’ll post.
A first attempt at a 50-50 rail usually winds up “pinched”. Leave some meat in the middle of the rail. Buy yourself a contour guage and look at a few boards with 50-50. Lowel
ty -Lowel! I may as well do 50/50s! But I want mine pinched…lol. so would I ignore the mid rail? T I a
Matty - I did a little homework (about belly) on old school lb.
A guy suggests roll in the front 3/4 going to flat in tail… soft rail edges, low rocker. This sounds close!
To get the belly I think you/I/ anyone could just take down perimeter w planer, but it would help if you have pp w fly adjustments bcuz it fades to a flat tail section in the last third… I suppose I could stagger cut where it fades… note: I got the info via archives, but it makes sense for the tail third to be flat for control.
Anyway, I think Planing in steps; deeper on perimeter and progressively shallower next to that, and flat in middle by stringer… then blend w block etc…I think I could do a crude version. It probably takes a few…
Also, I think a surform would be ideal to blend the belly part + soften the rail edges…I think I got enough to get started on a lb! Cheers
