5'10 shortboard

Just about finished on my number one. I think my lighting is a bit off, and the board is pretty far from perfect, but I’m happy with myself. The board is 18 1/2 wide by 2 3/8ths thick. My reason for posting this is I need advice on the last steps, bottom contour, and fin set up. Right now its completly flat, and level. I carried a bit of thickness to the tail, as well. I would prefer a quad set up, but do I have the room? Thanks for looking.

sorry f’d up the pics

nice. looks like plenty room both width and thickness-wise. why not a flat bottom & a good fin box system?

how wide is the board 1ft up from the tail?

What kind of waves board meant for?is this a board for getting into those smaller tight last secondbarrels, http://ariveraphoto.smugmug.com/gallery/4105358_2scfb#239357778_v6EAz like this jersey gem?

if so thruster, standard placement, and for bottom contours, single concave to a tight double between the fins like toned down bonzer works well if you surf off your rail, or if you want to pull in get shacked off your but, and blow the tail out, single to flat behind the trailer.

If you really want a quad, they make quad guns, which have pulled in tails, so width isn’t really an issue. One thing a quad does is that it puts all the fin area on the rail so you can have a wider tail which is capable of generating more speed. In waves like the one pictured, I look more for a board that gets up and planes quickly so I can get my line set. personally have not fooled around with quads too much. But I know that there are two general set ups, one which is more like a thruster and one that is more like a twin fin on crack

I had some buddies come over to help with my decision. We decided its a thruster, I had intentions of a quad, but I do not think the tail is wide enough, its 14 1/4 at 12inches from the tail. I had to correct alot of errors. Its an exact copy of my favorite thruster that I always thought would be fun to try as a quad. As for the bottom I did a simple single concave that fades to flat in the tail.

I tried to check the link you sent, it was a bunch of surfing pics of jersey. I surf in NY, so pretty much same waves tho. .

That isn’t a really narrow tail, and for a round tail thruster that is infact a little wide. If you still want to try it you can put plugs in to make it an either or deal. Good to see another north eastern person on here, I miss the waves we get up there, this whole southern NC deal is a lie.(no offense to anyone who is from down in Southern NC.)

We’ll see - still trying to figure the mckee quad guide out. Next board is a “set rail and duck board” - thats a up north board for sure.

I like your quote on the bottom. I have learned so much from shaping this board. Ive also inherrited quite a neat collection of tools (jig saw, dremmel, planer, chop saw, palm sander, hand planer) in the mean time. Only thing I had to buy were the lights, the board rack and light stands were made from scrap wood found in a dumptser down the streat.

First… you’re a true garage hack like me, and you should be proud of it. Those racks are so ghetto… LOVE 'em! Nice work for your first board. It’s gonna work great… you’ll love it.

Fin placement, C/O Bruce McKee, and his latest, greatest formula, adjusted for the short length:

Back fins 5" up, Front fins 10 13/16 up.

Back fins 6 5/16 apart.

Front fins toed in to 2 1/8 off the nose, back fins toed in to 5/8 off the nose.

Front fins position off the rail is your preference. I like mine about 1 1/8 off the rail.

All measurements are to the the trailing edge’s base.

Those racks are actually level! Before I aquired a chop saw I had to cut the 2x3s and 2x4s with a jig saw. Each cut took about 5 minutes. Thanks for the fin guide. Can you buy a futures jig guide w/o the router anywhere?
