5'11" Danny Hess Hollow Quad Fish.... Unreal...

Yesterday, my friend Brian Pavlick was passing through Carlsbad on his way back up to Santa Cruz, and I picked up a 5’11" Danny Hess Quad fish (hollow) from him. I took that thing out and immediately realized what a special board that was on the first wave I paddled into. By the end of the session, I was blown away at the board’s response to my surfing style and chemistry. As I told Bill Thrailkill about the board, I felt one with the wave. I was getting into sweet spots and critical points on the face that I had not been able to get into before. The board did all the work, and made me at least “feel” like I was a pretty damn good surfer (hahahahahaha)! Thanks Danny! Guys, if you haven’t tried one, go out and borrow one from Mollusk or Patagonia in Cardiff or something. Danny is really onto something.

Hey Kawika…

While I have’nt ridden one of Dannys, I rate them 100% in the looks department. He’s quietly an influence and does’nt put his hand up for status. I respect that.

Can you be sure the board is hollow? Danny’s site cites the use of EPS cores. And, how was the weight?

The boards are hollow with EPS ribs. The weights are posted on his website accurately.

There are not many people in this world like Danny.

Danny’s boards are very well shaped and perform at a high level. I’ve surfed a fish of his for a few years and it is a good shape but I’m particularly excited about a “Quintara” I have from him, which is a shortboard template with slightly lowered rocker and a little more volume. It has a fin set-up permitting it to run as a quad or thruster and it completely hauls ass!

The boards are hollow but contain some type of epoxy, which he shapes inside of the rails and then he places the laminate over the shaped epoxy. The material seems to lend itself to a good board but I think his boards work so well because he can flat out shape.
