Planning out my next build, 5’5" x 21 5/8" x 2 5/8" skinnier than last MiniSimmons. My previous was 5’2" x 23" x 2 5/8" by Stamps. Loved it and felt like I consistently surfed my best on it. I ended up moving on to a single fin 5’11" Nugget then my first shape, a 5’10" pulled in thruster egg. I’m liking the control of the thruster again and wanted to mix it with the MiniSimmons outline. I guess like a Simster, without a wing? I thought of doing a thruster like Tomo’s Nano but the more I widened the outline, the closer it got to being a MiniSimmons. Any suggestions for a twin + trailer or maybe go twinzer? My goal is to be able to get tighter turns than with the previous half moon keels. I don’t mind sacrificing some speed and not really into the quad setup.
I understand your hesitation on the quad (my first experience wasn’t all that hot). But on my last build I put in 5 boxes - for the quad trailer boxes I put them closer to the stringer, following placement similar to what Rusty uses. This rides a lot more like a thruster w/4, but has a ton more hold and goes wicked fast.
I'd make sure planshape especially in the tail, rocker and bottom contours are goin to give you the desired performance before deciding on fins... Fins play a massive part in a boards performance but think from what you have said and where you are trying to go, I'd be focussing on getting the shape and design spot on first.....and I think you are on the right track with the simster type set up...but wouldnt disregard the quad either, by using upright templates ( especially on front ) and correct placement, you can have a super fast board but still get good pivot....
Thanks for the advice. I changed the outline considerably adding bumps for pivot points and to narrow the tail for what I’m looking for the board to do. Big nod to Larry Mabile’s Ghostbuster shape which I really am intrigued by as a twinzer. I think however, I will try the twin + trailer on this board since I’ve gotten so used to that central pivot point.
imho almost any other fin situation will allow for a tighter turn radius than half moon keels. The cutaway allows release.
that is a good point
that is a good point. i really wish i had that board still to try other fins and figure out what it is i really want. i do know that i surfed my thruster yday and there were some waves where i really missed my MiniSim and others where I liked the control on turns.
