6"4" quad for a friend

#14 6’4" x 11 1/16" x 19 1/8" x 14 1/2" x 2 5/16". Blank is a Marko eps. Airbrush is Creatix paint over foam, I call it the rotten watermelon. Used the Varathane satin clear over the sanded finish. I’ll post more pictures later. Mahalo Swaylock’s!

Nice!! The color scheme’s name is right on the mark…

Did you spray the varathane?

another beaut DMP! more pics please; esp want to see the cluster

I sprayed this one. I used an old gun that has o ring leaks that I don’t use any more. The stuff levels so well, has almost no odor, and cleans up super easy. For one solid coat top and bottom it takes less than 6 oz.

Thanks! I’ll post some more later with picts of the bottom. I’ll take a look at my notes and post the fin set-up measurements.

Did you use the floor varathane or the regular? Water based? Any thinning to spray?

Thanks,

JSS

Water based floor finish. Straight out of the can and into the hvlp. The only thing that I would change would be to try the sealer first, sand with 400 or 600 then spray with the finish. Either that or sand it to 400 or 600 then spray. When I go to 220 you can still see small scratches with one coat.

Either way it is way better than the sanded finish, no dirty finger prints or red dirt stains.

Hey

Looking very good! What is this board meant to be ridden in? Also what are the bottom contours?

What advantage were you looking for with the four fins as opposed to 3? Or 5?

thanks for posting, that’s inspiring!

Thanks Moksa. This board was made for a friend that is 6’2" 175-180. He wanted the board for smaller summer time surf on Maui. I made him a narrow 6’6" round pin quad that he really liked and this one was to be for smaller mushier surf.

Bottom contours are a v shaped concave starting under the front foot. Point of the vee is narrowest under the front foot widening and becoming deeper at the tail. Concave doesn’t go to the boards edge. Been putting a flat area before the rail. Theory is you maintain the flatter bottom curve at the fins for drive yet have the concave in the center to assist with water release and speed. I’m starting to find that the concave bottom feels and works better on the quads.

Advantages of the quad is speed especially for larger riders in smaller or slower surf. You can generate speed very quickly. To counteract the vague stuck on a track feeling that you can get on a snap I’ve been narrowing the tails, leaving a bit more meat at the tail to assist with release, and tweaking the fin placements. So far I’ve gotten on a good design flow at least for myself and have made a few that have all the positives of a thruster and a quad. In comparison to a 5 fin I can only guess, but the theory sounds exciting. I think that if you are a back footed surfer the direct drive and feel of the board is second to none.

Looks pretty sweet…

Care to share the fin placement, toe-in, etc?

gracias!

Fin placement is rear of front fins 11 1/4" from tail, 3/4" from rail, 1/4" toe. Rears are 5 3/8" from tail, 1" from the rail, 1/8" toe. Fins are FEA’s on the fronts and the 3.75 double foiled rears. If this was my board I would have put on the 4" rears.

At 3/4" from the rail the front box is right on the rail. I wanted to go to the extreme and see how it effected the ride. My friend is very technical and is great for giving me feedback good and bad.

You can see my screw-ups on the airbrush. I tried to hide as much of it as I could with the good ole magic marker trick.

I apologize for the large sizes. I’m trying to figure out the photo bucket.

Thanks for the info…

I noticed that on a lot (all?) of your quads you are using the 1/4" and 1/8" toe-in combo for front and back fins. Have you tried anything else? Have you gotten any feedback?

gracias…
