I picked up a Safari blank today from a friend and am shaping a 6’1" stubby with it. I’m basing it after my orange South Coast Stubby single fin, but am going to add some concave and make it either a twin fin or thruster. Here’s some pics of the progress…
Finished (finally) shaping the board tonight…Here’s some pics. Still deciding whether to send it to Moonlight or do it myself with epoxy…AND fin configuration…
Just glassed the bottom of the board. Used the Resin Research epoxy for the first time. Personally, I thought it kicked ass. No smell whatsoever, you use waaaaay less, no big mess, etc…the lam came out great. Here’s a couple pics. I’ll go out and cut the laps a little later after it hardens some more.
Thank you Benny1…I’ve never even seen anyone do it before, I just used the advice from you guys and Gregs Epoxy Primer. Worked like a charm, and I am SOLD on it from now on…Unless of course it starts peeling or something next week!
I’m following your progress. Looking good. Installing boxes with Keith M is a good idea. Doug S must live less than 4 miles from me , Hope to meet him some day…
Now, about your glassing schedule… Are you just going for it or are you heating the work shop ? Day time highs have been 70-75 but night time lows are dipping below 40. My friends who work graveyard shift are talking about temps in the mid 30’s. Most people posting on Swaylocks with RR problems are working in temps below 70 degrees F
I don’t have the luxury of heating the garage Stingray, so I’m just “going for it”, you know like they used to do in the old days…
The temperature when I started yseterday was about 75 and dropping. I was finished laminating and it was pretty much hardened my sunset (or just past). I cut the laps at 6:30pm with absolutely no issues.
How do you think something like this might work on this board?? I like the idea of a standard box and thentwo ProBoxes on each side. and I REALLY like this center skeg…
Another question…I lam’d the bottom last night, flipped it before going to bed and cut the lap line. Came out great. I had to work late today and totally forgot to put a “filler” coat on while the lam was still tacky…Should I just go ahead and lam the deck tomorrow (if I get home while it’s still warm), let it sit overnight, come back the next day and basically “hotcoat” the bottom? Am I going to run into any issues with the hotcoat bonding with the lam?
