6'3'' semi fish/fun fish/hybrid swallow tail

Here’s a pic of my latest. 6’3’’ x 15n x 20.5-1’’ x 16’'. I wanted something similar to my twin keel, but with a bit more manouverability. Im hoping the behind centre widepoint and the ( although wide for most boards ) narrower nose will help turning. We’ll see. Also, i will be glassing this one light, 4oz bottom 4x4 deck, with patches for the fins ( 6oz ), and maybe 2 small deck patches near my feet. Its made from a standard foam weight ( one up from standard shortboard foam ), and i have only skimmed the deck crust off, so it should be ok.

Dont mind the outline near the nose, i was just playing around. I have a set of fcs PC-7 quad fins that will go on this board, using the mckee setup

good on ya mark

you going to spray it ?

will the system be fcs , fin solution or probox [just so i know what bases to do]

cheers

ben

…a back fin box too , perhaps ?

cool, kind of reminds me of this one:

Should be pretty fun, I have a similar board 6’2"x20" cant remember the nose and tail measurments right now but it is super fun in head high and under surf, not as loose as my standard thrusters but really fast and fun to do long drawn out speed carves with. It is a tri in the photo but I’ve since put a couple boxes in and like it much more as a quad.

have fun

More than likely fin solutions mate, easy to install!!.

EDIT, yes ben, i absolutely will spray it!!. I may even make up some cardboard/paper templates on the computer.

Shoelesspat, how does it go compared to a twin keel??. And what boxes are they?. I like the outline, and the rails look nice too, is it poly??

Hey Mark, the boxes are Red-X. and the forward ones are set too close to the rail. to be honest I can’t really compare it to a twin keel as I have very rarely ridden one. I do have a twinzer with the red-x twin fin set designed from Lost… on another board which is fun and loose but the quad feels more like a thruster which I like. doesn’t hold or drive on bottom turns as well as a tri obviously. I think the twin keel would give it more of a slidey/ loose fish type of feel.

The foam is Dow XPS with balsa/birch perimiter stringer and epoxy. The XPS is my favorite type of foam to surf on, it rides with kind of the best charecteristics of both poly and eps, although it is a pain to shape and glass.

have fun

looks nice but think you will lose alot of your glide by pulling your wide point back, it looks fun and I am sure you will have fun on it but it will be very different to your twin keel, have to put a quad in it wouldnt you ??? how are you doing the rocker ??? you have to ride the AquaBat…if we find it ??? here she is, hope it turns up

Hey mark, yeah i will lose some glide, but im trying to ween myself off my front foot addiction haha. I want to try and learn to ride back foot boards, though this should be nuetral, though i’ll only know when i surf it. Yeah quad PC-7’s, rocker is around 4 1/2 nose, and 2 1/2 tail ( could be wrong so i’ll measure later ). When it gets here i’ll be very keen to try it mate.

P.S my egg will arrive today, so expect pics in the other thread i started. Super keen to try it tomorrow, will let you know how it goes. First fin setup will be 7 1/2’’ LB fin on its own, or maybe with gx-q rears.

CHEERS

I shaped a 65 x20 x 2&3/4 today for the owner of reef 2 beach surf.we’ve been mates for years and I finally got around to making him a board. It a swallow tail flyer with a single to double with a spiral vee. boxy rails will have 4x4x4 glas job and a protek finish with glassed on hexalite fins from speeedfins.hows that for info … It was shaped out of a burford 6’7b one of my favorites.

Any pics mate?? i love seing pics of all the different “fishesque” type boards.

No pics, haven’t got a digital camera.

Some progress pics. Definately made some mistakes with the rails, and in other ares, but im super keen to glass-wax-surf. Need to save up for glass resin and boxes so might be a while before its glassed.

Here’s the spray job, not sure whether to laugh or cry. Better than plain old white i guess

Lammed the bottom yesterday. Used white pigment, plus blue tint. Didn;t come out as solid as i wanted, although it looked fairly solid in the bucket. Cutlap isnt even, and i ended up with some dry laps, and a few kinks and bubbles, but nothing major. Happy for a first attempt, at least it wasnt a total disaster!!!

More mistakes, but im done with the lamming. Tried a resin swirl. White pigment, plus a touch of magenta, though you cant see it!!!, over the deck patch, which was tinted blue. SHould take the focus off the airbubbles and drylaps etc haha
