I read a lot of Swaylocks, Archive stalk etc. Now time for my first questions and I would be stoked for a little feedback. Im only a few boards deep and dig on what I can learn from people on Sway.
I just shaped a
L: 6’3"
W: 22"
N: 17:
T" 15 7/8" Round
Thk: 3 1/8th "
Flat To Spiral Vee (flat tail) starting right behind center of board
Rail: Soft & Full nose, Tucked under edge Mid, Hard as balls tail
Very little rocker 4 3/8ths nose and 1 3/4" tail.
Slightly domed deck
10.5" box @ 4.5 inch from tail ) Should I push the box a little more foreward? I want the big box to really allow for some movement of the fin for tuning.
Im about 180 , ride the Mid Atlantic. Looking for this single to really punch the line and be able to drop back in the pocket of smaller and mush waves but still allow for some performance Performance as in can work in good conditions.. I used a 6'9" A Clark Superblue blank.-
Now, Im about to glass it. So, would anyone advise Volan cloth instead of 6 oz cloth ( 2 + 1)? Second, does anyone have an opinion of the rocker? More or less? I my boards to have a foreward widepoint…this board is at + 3" of center from tail (towards nose). Would the Volan be better suited for a flexy foam core or is the 6 oz sufficient? I dont want it to act like a trampoline when a nice set comes to town.
I plan to use the yellow pigment ( how much for this board should I use in the Lam res?) and rock a gloss coat. I want it to be heavy enough for a solid amount of inertia and not bog down in flats. I guess im just looking for any suggestions before I glass it, stick in the box, and am unable to change rocker or deck specs. Ill try for some pics once i locate the digital cam.
6-6-6 is very durable and heavy in my experience. I bit lighter option would be 4-4-4 with another 4 oz. stomp pad under your back foot or anywhere else you beat up your boards. I’m just a little lighter than you and wouldn’t worry about too much flex in a 6-3 that is over 3 inches thick regardless of how you glass it. Volan is used more for a classic look than for strength or flex I believe. Mike
Flat boards are hard to do tight radius turns on, so I don’t know how much performance you’re expecting, but… it’s a single fin anyway. Overall, it sounds like fun to me.
I’d also be trying to keep it relatively light, so I’d be glassing 6/4 on the deck, and 4 on the bottom, or even 4/4+4 deck patch just 3/4 of the board. If you’re trying to make it bullet proof, and don’t mind adding weight, go with volan.
It sounds like all that thickness will resist snappage, so don’t be glassing to guard against that.
For my single fin eggs, I like to look at where the tip of the fin will be if it’s all the way back in the box. I like the tip close to the tip of the tail, so that’s usually about 4 or 5 inches from the tail depending on the fin you use.
I also look at where the tip of the fin would be if it is all the way up. If it looks like it will be too far up, I’ll go ahead and put it a little bit further back.
For a 6’ 3" with those dimensions, I would be a little concerned about a single. In powerful waves you might need little side bites to keep from spinning out when you put it on edge really hard. Or else your going to be nursing your turns instead of jamming the board on edge. I had to do that with my stubbie.
A flat bottom single fin can be turned as well as any other board if you stand in the right spot. Generally, I move my rear foot back a little to turn, then up a little once the the board is in a planing mode. So there’s a lot of foot movement to make the board do what I want.
I woud glass it lighter for more of a lively responsive feel, beter to have a board that feels good but dents a little than have a board thats a tank and doesnt dent much… You wont be doing too much performance stuff or spending too much time in the pocket unless you have enough rocker to fit in there, I would increseit a bit and choose a dense foam, a solid blank will limit dents and dont take much off the deck, just skim it…Singles are fun but limit what you can do so I would have the box positioned so it can easily be moved forward when you want to lossen it up…Would you go shorter ??? have fun…
