Been real into the single fin vibe as of recent so I thought I should post my most recent work. 6’5 x 20 x 2.5’'. I honestly can’t take any credit for this design myself as Bill Thrailkill talked me through working out the proportions of the plan shape. I had some numbers that I wanted to hit and with his help I was able to draw this up. I’ve surfed the board in handful of times but found that this shape really likes hollow, fast, powerful waves. Ocean Beach in San Francisco definitely provided that this winter and the board was a blast. Thanks for looking!
That shape is almost exactly the same as a 6’6" Lopez Lightning Bolt from the 70s I have. Wide point just about exactly the same it seems. I have a 6’5" CI MSF that’s fun when it’s steep and lined up.
Once you get to the point you can actually answer here, I would like to know more about your board. I am currently also planning my second built which will be a single fin as well, so I am gathering as much knowledge as possible…
I share your sentiments with the fun factor of the board being contigent on the steepness of the wave. I took the board out at the hook in SC on a 6 foot day and it did not want to go at all. In 6 to 8 foot ocean beach the board is a whole different animal.
Sebastian,
So this board is a little different than a more traditional single fin. The front is sort of a mild hull entry with turned up rails that immediately shift into down rails with just a bit of tucked under edge. Maybe an 1/8 of an inch or so. The rest of the board is is completely flat. Less is more I think. The rocker is pretty low… which will definitely be changed in the next board. I have about 3.5 inches in the nose which is too low and about 2 in the tail… which feels pretty good. This rocker template does allow me to get into waves a little bit earlier though, which is nice.
