7.5 Hollow Sequioa Swallowtail

7.5 Hollow Sequioa Swallowtail

Years ago, my father-in-law planted a Sequoia between his driveway and a slough on the side of his home on Puget Sound…

The tree grew fast and was lifting, then breaking the concrete slab, so Farrell had the tree taken out…Fortunately the tree sections were between 8 and 12’…Someone who cared, cut and dried the 4x4’s slowly and unforced…I was given a few sticks and knew what I needed to do…Build a board for Farrell who has been so supportive over the years of my surfy thing…

What a wonderful Christmas gift !!

Beautiful board Paul…

Epoxy with a roller and no sanding??  Please tell us more…

The Epoxy & Hardener were warm, as was the board which had been sanded to 100 grit…

I did a complete wiping with De-natured Alcohol, then many wipes with a clean dry hand…

Epoxy mixed, poured out, then spread with a 1" x 4" foam roller…The box-stores have 'em…

Slow rolling to reduce foaming…Cross wise, length wise, repeat, repeat…

Finally, I spend 15 to 20 minutes with a heat gun thoroughly going over the epoxy to warm and allow the resin to release the nearly invisible air bubbles…

Nice work there Paul.  I like the fuller nose outline on that template and the book matched grain.  I'm sure he appreciates what he has received.

Nice tip on the roller/hat gun treatment too.  The finish looks great.

100% cool

The book matching was the first thing I noticed, nice to have the pieces in sequence from the same tree, makes for beautiful work, keep it up

Awesome Board Paul!

The woodwork and glasswork is exceptional.

Good one Paul !!!

Paul,

Thanks so much for sharing your work.  Love the hot air gun.  Do you use addtive F your lam and gloss coats?

dg.

ps: i wish my lawn was that green!

seconded. the bookmatching and arrangement of pieces hits major style point multipliers.

the look of total stokage is worth a million words.

" Do you use addtive F your lam and gloss coats?"

No I don’t… To my eye, it seems to “cloud out” the resin…I like clear…

BTW: Green lawns are the norm up here 90% of the time…
