7' minimal blank, need help deciding which way to go

I have a minimal blank at my parents house, since being inspired by ACE’s thread. What im trying to figure out, is should i go with the classic mini longboard/minimal wide round nose, forward widepoint and narrow tail, or wide tail ( 15 3/4’’ is as wide as the tail goes on the blank, so probably 15 1/2 max ), narrow nose nugget style single fin. Not really keen on making a 7’ shortboard shape. Nose on the blank is 18, and 22+ wide, 3’’ thick.

Rocker is 5.2" nose and 2.5" tail.

Anyone wanna throw some suggestions around??. I just got a pacific longboarder mag, and they have a replice bobby brown shape, looks like it has a pulled down widepoint, and narrow nose. Looks like a nice shape, and with the rocker i have in the blank, maybe that sort of shape would work ok. Dont know if it would work at 7’ though, the one in the mag is 9’.

Oh, BTW, 5’10’’ 190lb’s, not a ripper, but surf a twin keel almost all the time so like fast turny board, but with this board im just looking to catch heaps of waves, and be able to move around the board. Beachies are my fave, followed by beachies, then beachies. Like steep waves when we get them and they aren’t closing out.

Cheers.

How about a fat arse wombat outline with a single fin box and 4 boxes/plugs, that way it can be a single, thruster, 2 + 1, twin or quad. Plus it won’t be such a big change from your existing fish outline.

If i go that way i was thinking around 16’‘n x 22+2’’ x 15’’ tail. Maybe even a 17’’ nose, but i dont want to catch the nose. Those FAW’s have like a 19’’ nose and 16’’ tail don they??. I’ve seen a few in shops and they look sweet. Not sure about fins until i decide. Probably leaning towards the wide nose naroow tail mini lb/FAW shape, just for wave hogging ability and paddling ease. But, i saw a few blokes on nuggets yesterday, and one of them ( on a ST 6’6’’ ) caught a wave that i thought he had no chance of getting. Maybe i could cut 2’’ off the tail, to get a 16 1/2’’ wide tail, and go the nugget style. I think i’d be happy either way, just want to decide soon.

Beerfan:

Look at this model I sent you it should fit the blank - Cut from the nose to get length. The tail at 15.4 is as wide as you want to go.

Let me know what you think?

I call it a mini glide. Trust me this will catch waves and plus it will turn!

Hey surfding, thanks a lot mate. If i use those dims at 7’, would it still work ok??. I was thinking of just using those dims on the side, at 3,6,12,18 and 24", but just start at 3,6,12,18 and 24’ from the nose. Might have a straighter outline in the middle but i can always bring it out 1/2’', but im not too fussed. Thanks mate, this site is full of great people who are happy to share with beginners like myself, how awesome!

That’s exactly what you do.

Glad I can help.

Let me know if I can do anything else for you?

Mate, you could glass it for me hahaha. I went with 16 3/4 nose, 21 1/2 wide +2, and a 15 1/8 tail. Just about as wide as the blank would allow. I’ve made the template ( mdf works much better than masonite i believe, and cheaper!! ), skinned the bottom of the blank, traced the outline, and rough cut the outline. Sooooooo excited. I definately enjoy the shaping more than glassing. Might sell my potato chip thruster and get this one properly glassed. The rocker looks a little bit much in the nose, but not ridiculous. We’ll see if it hinders paddling, it should surely help in steeper waves. Oh, and its actually a 6’11’', long story.

Thanks for your help surfding and all other swayaholics. Will update when i progress.

Cheers

Here’s a pic of the blank templated and rough cut to 1/8’’ or so from the line.

Bottom is flat and because i didn’t cut too much of the width off the blank, i dont think the rails will take long to shape. FIngers crossed.

How about a thick 6-11 type rpt ?

H

Whats an rpt herb??

rounded pin tail me thinks

Thanks mate, would that make it an egg then??

Got the template out, and started modifying. I am really happy with using 3mm mdf for templates, it is sooooo easy to work with and modify, very fast to change the shape. Anyway, it looked so good that i changed it, even if rpt doesnt mean round pin tail, im gunna go with it. A rough cut pic. I think it looks a lot better.

Yes rpt = Rounded pin Tail.

Looks great !

You should rock on that one !
