I recently found a 70’s Michael Olivares 5’10 single fin at Garage sale. After some research I discovered Mike Olivares shaped for Con and Jeff Ho at Zephyr. I am wondering what label this board is shaped under. The z on the deck makes me think Con. Anyone know?
In the 1970s It was a common practice for shapers to freelance building boards for people. Most likely the board you have is one of those boards and not a Con factory built board.
Thanks! that would make sense. The Z on the deck threw me through a loop since Z could stand for Zephyr or Con, but I guess its just for aesthetics.
Thanks again.
Con never used a “Z” , so why would you think it was one?
The board looks like it has some added pigment color in the nose and tail areas. Most likely, to cover some damage. There might even be a logo under that pigmented resin. But, it really looks like a backyard job, to me.
The color at the nose and tail you see is definelty original to the board.I meant to clarify on the “Z”. I was thinking it could also could be read as a side ways “N”-- a logo used by Con. I thought it might be a possibility since Mike Olivarez used to shape for them.
the board is just a back door shaped board nothing all that special unless you are collecting mike Olivarez boards.
Hey satya
Mike comes into the shop every now and again with his huskie, more so as of late and I’ll show him the pic and see if he recognizes it and let you know!

Hey Johnny:
It would be really cool to hear from the man who shaped the board. Let me know!
Cheers
