8' Funboard - 4oz or 6oz?

Im looking to build a board (#4) in the 8ft range. A funboard for small/mushy days. Im figuring 6oz (plain weave E), both sides + deck patch would be the way to go. Since Ive began reading about board design, Ive always gotten the general idea that 4oz is mainly for performance shortboards and not a good idea for anything larger, but I dont know if thats exactly the case really. Just thought Id look for other opinions. Whaddya think? Does the 6oz deal sound good, or too heavy?

Thanks

Robbie

Depends what you’re looking for… to me, ‘funboard’ says ‘beginner-board’, so lighter means less injury. Not that there’s anything wrong with owning a funboard… I’ve got one. But it’s also the board I give to friends who “…really want to learn how to surf”.

4 oz is lighter, and it’s less durable… but luckily I know how to fix a ding when I see one… and, unlike most my friends, I do fix them when I see them.

Go with the 6 oz. all the way around. It will last longer. If your worried about getting hurt, wear a helmut and flak jacket. If it’s too heavy hire a caddy to carry it to the water. Have fun, too. Mike

Weight diff is probably only going to amount to about 1.5 lbs.

So you have one board, 10lbs…the other, stronger, at 11.5 lbs…no big deal

What is a big deal is that funboard shapes get hit by the wave, and also resist sinking…4oz is only for shortboards, high performance, boards that sink easily.

I’d think an average 8’ funboard has just about TWICE the surface area of a 6’2" tri fin…so is like to break or stress fracture much more.

Go 6oz.

If you need hi performance, make a tri fin needle nose.

All that surface area can work against you in the wind.

4 oz will last a year at best under normal use. You can be assured of big dents and delams along the way. Go double 6 oz on the deck and single on the bottom. You need weight and momentum for glide in mushy conditions. Build it with quality to last, that’s what sets us apart from the commercial/disposable stuff. As far as the finished weight goes, well I was in a friend’s shop the other day and a lady bought two SurfTechs just because they were easier to carry - really didn’t care about how it rides. The guy she was with paid for them, so I guess she didn’t care about the price either.
