8'5" longboard quad fin placement help.. Futures Controllers

Gents, I have recently made a 8’5" LB that I have put a single fin box in.  It rides well, but I’ve got the itch to add some futures fin boxes and give it a go with the quad controller fins.  Question is, should I use with the McKee placement or tighten up the cluster and move the rears out toward the rails to utilize the fin design.  I love these fins on my minis, so I figured it can’t hurt to give them a try on a longer board. The tail is 17-1/2"w and the board is 22" w.  1/4" blended concave in the front third.  Any advise is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Do you have the McKee fin placement on your minis? If so, and you like it, then maybe go with that. Also take into consideration what type of surfing you’ll be doing on this board. It looks like a pretty full outline to be getting all high performance on. How is the entry rocker, rails, and tail rocker?

I haven’t used McKee in a while on my minis.  It works ok for them, but I have been moving placements around recently.  About 3-1/2" of both nose and tail rocker with a soft rail with a decent size concave in the front.  I’m not looking to go high performance with it, just looking for a little more bite and drive when I need it in beach breaks.  Perfect example was today, kinda mushy when I paddled out, but the tide dropped and it got a bit steeper.  I would have liked to drive it down the a little faster.  The high line with the wide tail and single fin is a little tough when it gets steeper.  I’m a big guy, so wide tails usually don’t bother me, but this one is a little tricky.  Thanks

leave it a single fin.

Ride report to follow…

Looks like you got some pretty soft rails and a flat board. I’m thinking its kind of like putting fancy rims on an old 57 Chevy pick up.

Not enough drive from an 8'5'' single fin??. Maybe the fin is too small?? Try a bigger dolphin fin?

Resinhead, I’m sure you are right.  This was a last ditch effort before she goes up on the chopping block.

Beerfan, I will check out the dolphin fins.  I haven’t tried those.  I am using plenty of fin.  8-9.75" on all the fins I’ve tried.

Heres what I have tried so far (in order of best set up to least favorite:

greenough stage 6

greenough 4a

dano old pleasure

weber performer

island cutaway

at this point I’m figuring out that the tail is too wide, too much nose concave, and need a harder rail.  I tried to pack too much into this shape, but I learned what I need to do next, so that’s what counts.  Trial and error I guess.

Maybe the quad will work?.?.  It looks like we will have a little swell coming Friday…

You might love the quad, so could be all good!? haha. Let us know how it goes. I love my greenough 4a in my 9'1'', but the 10" dolphin has much more drive than the greenough. The greenough has enough though, and is much more manouverable. My 9'1'' has a 14" round pin though. 17 1/2" does seem wide.

Before you sell it you could try adding an edge to your rails.  That alone would probably make a big difference.

Ride report:  pretty happy with it.  Rode it in offshore waist to stomach high with the occasional chest high wave.  It still noserides when tight in the pocket.  Not hang ten, but solid fives.  Bottom turns felt really good.  Also an unexpected bonus of some nice looseness at the tail end of turns.  It’s not perfect by any means, but It fits inside my car and it’s definitely a new take on surfing for me.

Will most likely make another one with the same template and add some more vee in the tail and go with a more performance rail shape.

Have you had it out  again?

I’ve surfed this setup a  a few times in the last couple of weeks in waist high onshore slop to doh.

Great bottom turns loads of hold. Feels a lot shorter than as a single. Really likes to take a high line, but no feeling of tracking.

Might try it with out the trailer I put it in as it looked unbalanced with such small fins it the rear.

mkee distances off tail but with the rears moved out to the same as fronts.

Hey tommorth, i prefer twin fins, and struggle with quads, but the best setup i found was pretty much what you have there, both on the rail, and big ( are they twins? ) fins up front with little ones ( lb sides ) behind. I found it to be a magic setup, on smaller boards, but still, for someone who can't surf most quad fins setups, it worked unreal for me, fast drivy and loose.

yep main fins were intended as twins 5x5. Feels basicaly like you said fast drivey and loose. Fun
