Currently shaping an 8’8 x 20 x 3 gun.
12" nose and tail
widepoint at centre
rounded pin tail
board with simple curves (I think)
Anyway, I’m asking about the rail volume, I’ve currently got a reasonably flat deck, probably only between a 1/4 to 1/2 an inch of dome in the deck.
Check the photo, does it look too thick? Also any hints on the rail shape itself would be helpful!
I’m keeping the volume full towards the nose, and refined towards the tail

How does your chart work Barry?

I basicaly make pencil marks at the center according to the thickness.
Two marks on the deck, two marks on the rail.
Bottom tuck bands already done.
After cutting bands with planer, rails have a basic shape.
Just corners need to be rounded.
Bands are different widths according to the rail thickness.
For instance, a 1-1/2" rail, will have two marks on the deck at 1-1/8" & 2-1/4". The last band, closest t o the center I put in with my sure-form.
On the rails, 5/8" & 1".
This would probably be easier if you saw a photo. I’ll take some.
Every rail thickness has its own set of measurements.
I only measure at the center as the bands tend to taper as they go to the nose and tail.
I hope you can see in these photo’s.
DMP is right.
Taking measurements helps.
Early in my shaping career, Gary Linden showed me how to make measurements when doing my rail bands.
I have a chart I made to consistently make my rails the same.
I measure my rails when they are still square.
I shape by hand not machine.
Those measurements help me stay consistent.

Its good to measure to keep track of what your trying to accomplish. By just going from eye I’ll try to take it down just a tad on the thinner side. By the time the board is glassed, especially gun glassed the rails will fatten up.

Thanks Barry!
They didn’t look right, a bit obese, I thinned them out by half an inch or so and they look much better.
i tend to shape by feel and gut, with an idea rather than having .a set in concrete design.
Should have trusted myself

between a 1/4 to 1/2 an inch of dome in the deck.
That would mean rail thickness is 2-1/2" to 2-3/4" right?
Pretty beefy.
That’s OK if you are a big guy.
200 lbs. and over.
When I shape a 3" board, rail thickness before rail bands is 2"-2-1/4".
