I am thinking of the Wingnut Cutaway for my 9’ longboard. It’s a rounded pin with a 14" tail. Would the 8" or 9" fin be better for this board. Looking for it to turn wll but have the ability for nose riding and triming. Thinking the 8" would be too small but not sure. Looking to surf it single even though it is a 2+1.
I have a K Rapoza 9’ 8" rounded pin 18" nose, and 14" tail, 2+1 set up. And I feel the 8" wing nut is an excellant center fin. I rode it during the last swell about two weeks back in solid 6’-8’(Hawaiian Scale) Maile Point. As well as 1-3 by pushing the skeg all the way forward. It’s the loosest fin I’ve found to date, but I’m still looking. It’s narrow base allows some deep carving turns, and deep rake still gives you drive and holding power in steeper sections. Hope this helped. Aloha Randy
If youre planning on using the board as a single fin, I’d suggest using the 9" fin, especially if you want to noseride the board. I have two 9 foot round pins and use a basic raked 9" fin on both with good results. Good idea to have the option to use the side bites for a 2 plus one set up. Good luck!!!
Hey Deb, There are a lot of 9" fins on the market. There is much more to measuring a fin than just how deep it is. A 9" wing nut cutaway will work quite well on your board. I have one myself that I surf occassionaly when the surf isn’t too demanding. You’ll find that as the wave faces get steep that it lacks drive and holding power however. With a 14" pintail. Your board has a lot of natural holding power so the fin may suit you just fin as a single. It’s certainly worth a try. It’s fun and kinda loose. If you want something looser there’s always a Velzy classic at about 8.5" or a Liddle flex at 9.0". The Velzy will nose ride reasonably well. The Liddle it too vertical to hold you in very well but is wicked fast. A Farbow is a possiblity too. I have few templates of my own, but the options go on forever. If I were going to choose something off the surf shop shelf it’d be 8.5" TK-Flex. http://store.yahoo.com/rainbowfins/tkflex.html My favorite is the 8.25 inch “Whiteside” I built for Alex Mook’s 9’2" Yater in the archives here at Swaylocks. I hope this helps. Mahalo, Rich
differing fins give a shape multiple personalities, never figured out why people only buy a fin and settle for it, possibility limiting that boards potential. Buy a quiver of fins and go play. If you have noseriding ability then you want more depth, but a 8" fin will easily hold for a hang five. If you plan on hanging ten(for more than a nano-second) is when you want that 9-10" raked Big Daddy!!!..Observe what the rippers at your spot are using or ask them…
