9'3" Y Blank... Need some dimensions please!

Hey Guys,

I picked up a 9’3"y blank yesterday from Mitch’s in Solana Beach and I’m going to make a nose rider out of it. I’m 23 years old, 5’10", 150 lbs, and an intermediate surfer that surfs mostly reef breaks up in Cardiff/Encinitas area… (Think Barney’s, Turtles, and Pipes) The blank 9’3" x 25" x3 1/2" with natural rockers…  What would be some good dimensions for me to make a great noseriding log? I only surf longboards, so the experience is definitely there but I’m just trying to nail down some great dims. Any good single fin placement ideas? What about ideal rails? Also, I think I would like to make a square tail, what would be a good size for that?

Thanks for the input!!

Here's my take on your situation....

I like my "noseriders" with a little less nose width than you'd see on a typical "noserider" board. If you feel comfortable up there, then go narrower. For me, tail kick and rail shape are key. I kick the tail fairly severe in the last 2 ft or so. I like 3 1/2 nose rocker and about the same tail rocker. give or take. Some are built with lots of rocker in the tail, but I don't go too exreme cause I still like speed when I need it. Rails are round for maxium suction, 50/50 from tail to 2/3 up the board, and in the nose I go up turned apex. belly troughout with flat, belly or concave in the nose depending on preference. My outline dims usually go as 9'6" 17 7/8" nose 23 wide 16 tail and 3 in thick. this isjust an example. I like my log outlines parallel, cause they ride well down the line, rather than having to noseride towards shore all the time. no 20" nose width for me. wide point center or back is good too with a tail block of maybe 6-7 in wide. I don't know you or how you surf or anything else. take this for what it's worth...this is what i do, others do differently. hope this helps you, good luck

oh yeah, fin placement for me is maybe 5 in up from the tail depending on fin temp and tail shape.

my take on the Yater blanks that are available, that I have experiance with, are the 9.3 to 11.3

they all have a rocker that seem to work better in larger surf

you could put most longboard outlines on it and shape it up and get a good board out of it

a little harder to paddle in small week surf, but when it gets juicy, it will work good.

my 2 cts

That was my favorite Clark blank, soooo versatile.  Long boards, hulls and death fish.  I digress...If you want a good outline, just steal it from the blank.  I made a couple of really nice boards with that outline.

It's not unheard of to flip it around and use the nose rocker for the tail.

Thanks for the input guys! Anybody else care to chime in??!
