I have a 9’ 8" Dextra Custom surfboard made in Santa Rosa, CA in 1964. It says “Custom” on the label. The board has more tail and nose rocker than any such board I’ve ever seen from this era and in all its dimensions it’s “tucked in” (for speed). The original glass skeg was sawed off (but saved) and a Bahne fin box was installed along with a leash plug. Otherwise, the rest of the board is intact and original. It’s condition is very good.
Also, I have a 7’10" Surfboards Hawaii, Acquarius Series, circa 1969 or 1970 in excellent shape with a serial # printed on the board.
Anyone out there know what these boards are worth today?
I can provide exact dimensions and pictures if that would help in determining value.
I have seen so called pop-outs like your Dextra go for up to $800. Someone maybe willing to pay that much for yours. The only setback for your board would be its being altered (the fin box and leash plug). The Aquarius could fetch anywhere from $300 or more. As with a lot of collectibles, the value of something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. You may want to try auctioning them off on ebay with a really high reserve price. Then you can see what others are willing to pay. There is one drawback and that would be if someone were to meet your reserve price, you’d be obligated to sell it to that party. If you put a ridiculously high reserve price, you should be safe from someone meeting it, and you’ll see how much others would be willing to bid on it.
Dextra Customs weren’t really “custom”. They just had fancier color jobs, stringers, and tailblocks. A near mint Dextra that was still bright and shiny might fetch $200-300 in today’s market. One that’s had the fin cut off and a leash plug installed is worth very, very, very little. The Aquarius might be worth 300 or so, as foamdust said. But that really depends on condition. Does it have the original glass on fin, or a box?
As usual, pictures go a long way in letting us know what you have.
In other words, asking what you have without photos is like asking “How long is a piece of string”?
