Do any of you enjoy riding waves by any other means than standing? Kayak, kneeboard, bodysurf, or however… or is surfing just about using the soles of your feet? (P.S. I have also asked this question in another surfing bulletin board. It`s elicited many insightful points of view. I look forward to reading your opinions, too. Thank you!)
intresting question… i have been surfing for most of my life and i began by just surfing a short board… as time has gone on i have also picked up longboarding, bodysurfing, windsuring in the waves, and butsking a kayak. i used to be one of those “dam …(everyting but shortboarding)” but i think that had something to do with surf mags and being a teen… the ocean has soooooo much to offer and i feel so lucky to be able to choose the best craft for the day… standing on the nose of a longboard, launching over a section on a windsurfer, slaming into the bottom bodysurfing, laughing my ass off butsking have all replaced those shitty days of frustration on a shortboard…
I always like to slide a few point waves on my knees on a longboard when its small. the feeling is alot more intense when your that close to the face.
I have gotten into bodysurfing big time, you wouldn’t know it but there are tons of different ways to surf a wave without anything but yourself. It’s quite nice actually.
Sometimes I’ll slide off my board and go swimming. I just swim circles around those non-thinking surfboard riders. Riders not surfers. If I’m really stoked I like to play with my remote control surfer. But really, most of my surfing is done on the internet (way too much on this site) and in my mind. Totally free and way over my head. Having fun… Rob Olliges
When I was a kid whenever the snow fell everyone raced to find a means of sliding down the local hill. The vehicles ranged from expensive sleds, to toboggans, to 55gal. drum lids, to pieces of cardboard, to rubber boots. Rides were done sitting, standing, prone, forwards and backwards. Everyone had fun. There was no system to judge rides by, but everyone knew when they had one or saw one and vehicle made no difference. Now like Rob I spend way to much time surfing the net and this site. However, I do enjoy dropping into swaylocks and cranking a hard cutback into a thread of interest. Take care and have fun today. Patrick
Greetings upper case m. I usually do the same, especially when I am getting tired and sore.
motorboat… while scouting for breaks
I still love to bodysurf…
I’ve ridden wooden paipo boards, styrofoam belly boards from the local drug store, short boards, mid lengths, longboards etc. One of the coolest rushes I’ve had riding waves as of late, was when I took my daughter out on the canoe ride at Waikiki beach. It was a blast, talk about the glide.
