A board for friends

The idea of making a board for others to enjoy has inspired me. I am in the process of trying to shape a board similiar to that from singlefin yellow and have done the math inside and out. Tyler’s shapes are just unique and I really want to grab some of the essence of a board for all conditions and one that my close friends and I can share and enjoy. I will not be selling this board but only trying to spread the stoke. Final length will be either 10’3" or 10’4". Any ideas?

10’4’'.

10’ 3’’ is way too short.

Thanks I’ll keep that in mind, although I meant I will eye it for final length to see if it flows properly. I made the blank with a flipped 2 13/16 nose rocker and 4 5/8 tail rocker.

I was just trying to be funny. Not sure it worked.

I laughed intially but I am looking for input if you have any. Thanks

Balsa, you made my morning.  I cracked up.

Cool that you are making a board to share with friends.

Balsa made me laugh too, and kept the thread from fading away, so good on him.

I have followed the thread, but unsure of what type of imput you are looking for?  You say you are modeling your board after a ‘Tyler singlefin yellow’, I haven’t seen the board in question, but you say you have “done the math inside and out”, meaning what?  That you have logged all the critical dimensions and design features?  Maybe scanned it to computer file for CNC?

At any rate, it sounds like you have chosen a shape you are stoked on, and are fully set up to replicate it.  There are no pics posted, so as far as I know, no one else here knows exactly what it is, other than a 10-3 or 10-4 single fin.  What were you wanting to know?

I understand how there may be confusion. The design I am going for is one that incorporates many types of longboard characteristics from the past but is a good overall design in all conditions and breaks such as reef or beach. My math was based on using dimensions from the Tyler Point Model and the Bing Nuuhiwa Lightwight and scaling up the model. Basically, what will work well in many conditions? Thanks

I have only (somewhat) recently gotten into riding longboards the past few years.  I have three longboards, and I love riding all three.  One is an 8-4 “mini” glider, single fin rounded pintail, 21" wide, thinned 50-50 rails, hard down rails in the tail, pulled in nose of a glider.  This one is especially favored in waves that are a little faster or bigger.

Another is a 9’ mal, 23" wide, wide nose, square tail, soft rails all the way around, no hard down rails in the tail.  Single fin, super wave-catcher, great in anything up to head high.

I also have a 9-6 Walden Magic, single with optional sidebites, which is a lot of board for me, great for waves that are smaller or slower, but not so good for takeoffs that are steep or grinding, where I mostly end up pearling.  This board has concave in the nose, to double concaves out the tail, with a beveled rail all the way around.  Fat rails, wide nose, lots of volume.

I don’t know if any of that is of any use to you, you know the conditions and riding ability, etc. of your gang, so I’m guessing you’re the best judge of what works for you.

That is excellent feedback and helps quite a bit. Different experiences with designs like you mentioned help shape a versitile board. My design in my head is similar to what you said your “mini” glider would be. Thanks

Anything 3’ or over, and not too mushy, I just love this board.  There is actually just a touch of “belly” in the nose, to pretty flat in the middle (with pinched rails, so the rails do roll up a bit on the bottom), to a little V out the tail with hard down rails - you wouldn’t think of this as a noserider, but if the wave walls up steep enough, you can trim way up on the nose and it’ll really maintain speed in the pocket, to where I’ve had guys paddle up and ask me “were you noseriding on that last wave?”, hahaha.

Your board looks great and I like the outline. As I mentioned earlier it is similar to what I had in mind. Is all that color work on the foam?

Thanks, the board was inspired by a 9-6 that Ace posted up, a real thing of beauty.  I plan to make a 9 foot or 9-6 version soon, at least its on the list.  And yes, all the color work was done on the foam before glassing.
