I have now made two epoxy boards. I used the squeegee you showed in the photo of “Paul.” They worked OK but I had some issues in that I was using tints. They did not squeeze out the tint thoroughly so my tints were not perfectly even (although you don’t even see it under the wax). I would go with the ones PLUS ONE is showing . They look like BONDO squeegees. I had a hard time locating them. PLUSONE if you’re reading this were did you get them?
Fiberglass Hawaii, ask for 6 inch and the kind of orangy-yellow spreaders which are softer
and have a “smooth side” and a “sharp side”.
Howzit PlusOne, Those yellow spreaders are what I use for cleaning up the rails also, got a bunch of different cut sizes.Aloha,Kokua
check out
or search “bondo” on ebay… about 18 cents each…
Hey Kokua,
good call on cutting them, I have a rail puller that’s my baby.
Hey jjp,
those aren’t the best ones but they will do if you modify them, but
still a little rigid. The FGH spreaders are unique, and really make
a difference in lamination control/quality.
The only thing I don’t like using a spreader for is color work, then
I use a squeegee but lately I clean up with the spreader.
One more vote for Plus-one’s choice… Nothing else. Although, if all you can get your hands on is Paul’s kind, that would be fine too. Those should be in the plastering/drywall taping section of your home center…
The rectangular squeegees can also usually be found in the Bondo section of auto parts stores.
Hey Chip, if you are comfortable with a certain tool then use the tool you are comfortable with.
It’s good to have a variety at hand, each one doing a different job. A flat stiff one for the flat areas, a flexy one for the curvy areas.
Brushing the rails may be easier I guess, but cannot remove the excess resin like an edge. With a little technique the rails can be lapped with no pulled threads, and minimal clean up.
Just get the fabic tight, no shine of excess resin, no bubbles.
Sorry Ben, I know it’s not as easy as it sounds. Practice.
Hi Ben, I use a plastic squeege in combination with a foam roller for the rails, I get the foam rollers from WA Salvage $2 each then cut them down into 3 lengths with a hacksaw. 1 length does one board before the epoxy starts do disolve and breakdown the inner cardboard.
I use a brush…I don’t know why…just do…$1.80 at Bunnings…
i like to apply it with my dick
just dip your dick in and spread it out like your butering your toast
saves money on contraception devices as well
also keeps it nice and stiff
can be hard to pee though
ps
dont try this at home as it is a professional glassers technique, and takes years of practise
must take forever with a tool that small…
yeah
but i use a slow hardener
and also thats part of the enjoyment
of glassing boards with dick
hi boardbuilders, a brush, spreader or squeegee…you’re way ahead of me, i’ve just finished planing a 7’3 solid balsa gun out of an old 50’s pig of a thing which was dying with rot and now looks bloody beautiful but it’s in desperate need of a thin lick of epoxy. gregs RR is out of the question here in southern aus, can any of you resin gurus recomend one of the many epoxies that suit surfboard construction, I think my choices here are west, botecote, fgi… then I’ll think rollers…brushes…aaagh
and by the way, many many thanks for so much freely given information
steve
Rubber rollers such as this one (there are smaller ones but I didn’t find any photos) should work good. Anybody tried these?
they work ok, i glassed the singly with one… i prefer a brush anyday!
Mr ChipFish
You really do ask some odd questions from time to time.
As you know my experience is in building another type of water sport board where I use Epoxy all the time and I would say squeegee or old credit card every time.
Regards
hi there ,
I just wondered , among you epoxy users …
who uses a brush , and who uses a squeegee , to laminate your boards ?
and if you’ve used both , which do you prefer ?
I ask , because it took me AGES doing the mal with a brush …
cheers !
ben
"i like to apply it with my dick "…
wow ! i thought i was the only one who did that ! what a relief to know I’m “normal”
I thought you just used your grandson…isn’t THAT how he became fused to your shoulder , Daz ??
are you gonna post those pics of how you and hixy do it ?
you know, pour resin on each other and roll around on the cloth …
