Buttons and Cheyne Horan , and GarrettMcNamarra , in fact , all at bondi

here’s the “article” …

"…Yesterday arvo , we had a few special guests down at Bondi, to begin with Buttons Kaluhiokalani (full name Montgomery Earnest Thomas Kaluhiokalani) - the 47 year old style master from Hawaii had a profound impact on modern day surfing with his unpredictable edgy style in the 70’s. Buttons, nicknamed after is distinctive curly afro locks by his grandma, was renowned to be a bit of a wild man in his day, is currently in town to promote his new surfboard/skateboard range.

We also had the Current World Champion of Tow-In Surfing - Garrett “G-Mac” McNamara. The 41 year old Hawaiian charges anything - eating 60 foot faces for breakfast. This man has no fear.

And finally the local champion, Cheyne Horan who starting surfing the Bondi shorey at age 10. After 20 years on the pro tour in the 70’s - 90’s Cheyne was renowned for his experimental board designs (like the Lexcen keel fin) and the originator of modern moves such as 360s and aerial flips - not to mention running up for the world title serveral times…"

I can’t believe “Buttons” is only two years older than me ?! He looks WAAAAY older.

Though his body still looks in good shape , (fortunately , from surfing) , it looks like all those years in the sun and doing drugs have taken their toll on his face and eyes …I just hope is brain is unharmed ??

His surfing was , [ and I hope , still may be?] , groundbreaking !

…I saw him in the vid “Quiver” , in the segment filmed at Straddie, a few years back , and he was getting and making some very deep tubes there !]

Buttons, Garret McNamara, Arnold Dowling and Kealli from the Buttons Hawaii crew were in Wrightsville Beach, NC a couple of weeks ago to help out with Izzy Paskowitz’s Surfers Healing camp for autistic kids. It was truly awesome to see these guys taking the kids out tandem surfing and hooting and hollering for each ride. All of these guys were a real class act with these kids. One of the best days I’ve ever had at the beach. A short clip in the link below.
