15 layers of 6oz cloth ,
3 layers of carbon fibre cloth …
…then 15 more layers of 6oz cloth…
I “rollered” them 5 layers at a time …ended up using around 200mls of polyester resin.
I will do another cf panel , so I will have a pair of fcs GS sized template back / ?front? fins , for the quad / ?twinzer? setup , on both my bushfire and prawn fishies …
cheers

“…ahhhh…the smell of resin , on a sunny afternoon !! …”
Cool thread chip…
but…
WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Surf is cranking at the moment!! Cott main is going off, with less than 5 guys out.
Save this housebound stuff for later this week when the swell is disappearing.
Tomorrow should be good as well!
Ant
…if you’d rung , I woulda been there .
Is the wind dropping suddenly , then ? Or is it just cott groyne offering some protection from the south aspect of the wind , maybe ?!
I ask , because I just checked scarbs 30 minutes ago , and it was onshore pus . [Now I’ll check the cott cam , and city’s cam , to see if you be exaggerating]
I’m dawn patrolling Scarbs tomorrow , though , DEFINATELY …early night tonight !
cheers

hey !!!
i’ve loking for some carbon fiber last weeks and in Europe everybody says is almost impossible or incredible expensive… it seems airbus is buying almost all the production…
In one of the photos Ben, you’re serving Blue Cordial.
Are you having a party, mate?
Crumpets? Mmmmm…
Good thread. Have you sanded Graphite before? Be sure NOT to get
the “itchies”. Unlike glass, it drives into your skin and your body doesn’t
repel it like glass. Not sure where it goes once it reaches your bloodstream.
Probably the body’s natural filter, the Liver…
Seriously, wear a paper painter’s suit or an old Sloppy Joe that you can
chuck afterwards or donate to Hicksy or somebody…
Stop it, you’re making me itch just thinking about it…
I’ve made a few carbon fins. Or should I say Claytons carbon fins. To save on carbon I lay up regular E glass panels with black pigment. Cut and foil the fin, then glass a layer of carbon over each side. Gloss and polish. Pretty hard to tell the difference. No point in turning all that expensive carbon into dust. platty.

Rolling ont he floor laughing my ass off!!!
"I paid for carbon but it’s fiber painted black
No carbon anywhere I want my money back"
humming the tune of Paint it Black
I might just add, these fins were for me. Not paying customers. platty

haha nice one!
“IF THEY LOOK HARD ENOUGH, WHAT WILL MY BUDDIES SAY?”
I HAVE TO FLIP MY PANEL, AND QUICKLY LOOK AWAY…
I see an e-glass panel, and it is tinted bla-ack…
No pigments any more, my friends will give me fla-ak…"
LoL
Actually, the best thing to do is like Platty says, foil first, then put the carbon
on, this gets the most out of the carbon, plus the dust hazard is reduced.
The middle e-glass layers could be lammed using a resin mixed with
microspheres to get the weight down and make the sanding much quicker.
(using black pigment, of course. Not red)

Yeah, carbon in the middle layers is not much of a change in stiffness.
Carbon laid up with polyester resin is no change at all, you really need to use epoxy to make the composite stronger, the weakness of the polyester resin dominates the layup if you use it with carbon fiber.
I did a bunch of carbon fiber inlay fins, and ultimately decided a simple glass fin with 1-2 layers of carbon fiber EPOXIED on the outside after foiling was the way to go…
At the same time I figure you can’t really make fins MUCH thinner than today’s fins without losing a lot of stiffness, even using carbon fiber, you could only go about 30% thinner, and performance wise that is barely noticeable. Stiffness is really a strong function of the thickness - adding carbon fiber in the middle of the fin does nothing for stiffness, adding it to the outside can make the fin a LOT stiffer at the same thickness, or let you creep the thickness down (at the same stiffness), but only a little.

Hi Dave !
…do you have any photos of them please , mate ?
Here’s the last pair of carbon fibre inlay side fins that I made …
cheers !

Hey CCCHHHHIIIIIIPPYY
They look nice mate, almost as nice as the woody ones I’ve nearly got around to posting to you!!!
Hey Ben, Sorry for taking so long to post some photos. I’ve been consumed by another project. Details to come soon. Here are some photos. platty.
